The Territory of New Guinea was an Australian-administered United Nations trust territory on the island of New Guinea from 1914 until 1975. In 1949, the Territory and the Territory of Papua were established in an administrative union by the name of the Territory of Papua and New Guinea. That administrative union was renamed as Papua New Guinea in 1971. Notwithstanding that it was part of an administrative union, the Territory of New Guinea at all times retained a distinct legal status and identity until the advent of the Independent State of Papua New Guinea.
The initial Australian mandate, entitled the Mandate for the German Possessions in the Pacific Ocean situated South of the Equator other than German Samoa and Nauru, was based on the previous German New Guinea, which had been captured and occupied by Australian forces during World War I.
Most of the Territory of New Guinea was occupied by Japan during World War II, between 1942 and 1945. During this time, Rabaul, on the island of New Britain, became a major Japanese base (see New Guinea campaign). After World War II, the territories of Papua and New Guinea were combined in an administrative union under the Papua New Guinea Provisional Administration Act (1945–46).

Port Moresby (; Tok Pisin: Pot Mosbi), also referred to as Pom City or simply Moresby, is the capital and largest city of Papua New Guinea. It is one of the largest cities in the southwestern Pacific (along with Jayapura) outside of Australia and New Zealand. It is located on the shores of the Gulf of Papua, on the south-western coast of the Papuan Peninsula of the island of New Guinea. The city emerged as a trade centre in the second half of the 19th century. During World War II, it was a prime objective for conquest by the Imperial Japanese forces during 1942–43 as a staging point and air base to cut off Australia from Southeast Asia and the Americas.
As of the 2011 census, Port Moresby had 364,145 inhabitants. An unofficial 2020 estimate gives the population as 383,000. The place where the city was founded has been inhabited by the Motu-Koitabu people for centuries. The first Briton to see it was Royal Navy Captain John Moresby in 1873. It was named in honour of his father, Admiral of the Fleet Sir Fairfax Moresby.
Although Port Moresby is surrounded by Central Province, of which it is also the capital, it is not part of that province but forms the National Capital District. The traditional landowners, the Motu and Koitabu people, are represented by the Motu Koita Assembly.
Port Moresby hosted the APEC summit in November 2018. However, there were concerns about security given the capital's reputation for violent crime.

Another great place to visit in nouvelle Caledonia. A wealth of information and displays about the settlers , missionaries and the many sailing ships brought out by the French to settle here. Easy to get to part of town, easy walk from the bus station.

A few good displays. Nice touch to have French and English. Not a big museum but good history on display. Current display was on La Monique, the ship lost at sea with a large loss of life and no clue as to why, where or how.

Small but comprehensive. The section covering the La Perouse expedition & shipwreck contains many artifacts, and it has AC.

A must-see museum with Nautical flavour As others have said you could easily overlook this Museum located where it is – but it really is one of those hidden treasures. Beautifully laid out and with translations of virtually every display from French into English. Some interactive displays for little people. An amazing story of discovery, loss, searches, mutinies, pride and hatred. It has it all!!

Such a hidden gem amongst the museums in Rotorua. Even though I’m not a resident, I paid the lower price. They’re understaffed but are doing their best at being friendly and helpful. Worth a visit for sure!

This is a real gem of a find in Rotorua. It is off the main road between Rotorua and Rotoiti – you turn at McDonalds in Owhata! It’s reminds me of some of the special muses in the UK that show real life as was. It’s not just steam engines and a model railway. I took my boys who lived buty girl was jealous when she saw pics of all the other attractions: other little houses with antiques and collections of hats dolls, cameras, books everything that people used 100+ years ago. Even the Rotorua old jail which housed 2 inmates only. Just a really cool experience.

This is new to Whangarei since we were last visiting NZ. Its a great addition/attraction to the town of Whangarei. The artwork was interesting, the whole atmosphere and views from the top were fantastic. We espically loved the hundreds and thousands of mosaics throughout and outside. A real interesting place to visit.

A very interesting gallery with examples of Hundertwasser’s work and his personal history. The rooftop garden/forest is well worth a look. We found his work to be reminiscent of work by Gaudi in Barcelona, especially in the use of colour, materials and shapes. If you’re heading north, go to the Hundertwasser Public Toilet in Kawakawa if you enjoyed this gallery.
