    Geelong ( jih-LONG) (Wathawurrung: Djilang/Djalang) is a port city in Victoria, Australia, located at the eastern end of Corio Bay (the smaller western portion of Port Phillip Bay) and the left bank of Barwon River, about 65 km (40 mi) southwest of Melbourne. Geelong is the second largest Victorian city behind Melbourne with an estimated urban population of 268,277 as of June 2018, and is also Australia's second fastest-growing city. Geelong is also known as the "Gateway City" due to its critical location to surrounding western Victorian regional centres including Ballarat in the northwest, Torquay, Great Ocean Road and Warrnambool in the southwest, Hamilton, Colac and Winchelsea to the west, providing a transport corridor past the Central Highlands for these regions to the state capital Melbourne in its northeast. The City of Greater Geelong is also a member of the Gateway Cities Alliance in partnership with Councils from Newcastle and Wollongong. The traditional owners of the land on which Geelong sits were the Wadawurrung (also known as Wathaurong) Aboriginal people of the Kulin nation. The modern name of Geelong, established in 1827, was derived from the local Wadawurrung name for the region, Djilang, thought to mean "land", "cliffs" or "tongue of land or peninsula". The area was first surveyed by the European settlers in 1838, three weeks after Melbourne. A town post office was opened by June 1840, the second to open in the Port Phillip District. The first woolstore was erected in this period and it became the port for the wool industry of the Western District.During the Victorian gold rush, Geelong experienced a brief boom as the main port to the rich goldfields of the Ballarat district. The town then diversified into manufacturing, and during the 1860s became one of the largest manufacturing centres in Australia with its wool mills, ropeworks, and paper mills. It was proclaimed a city in 1910, with industrial growth from this time until the 1960s establishing the city as a manufacturing centre for the state, and the population grew to over 100,000 by the mid-1960s. During the city's early years, an inhabitant of Geelong was often known as a Geelongite or a "Pivotonian", derived from the city's nickname of "The Pivot", referencing the city's role as a shipping and rail hub for the area. Population increases over the last decade were due to growth in service industries, as the manufacturing sector has declined. Redevelopment of the inner city has occurred since the 1990s, as well as gentrification of inner suburbs, and currently has a population growth rate higher than the national average.Today, Geelong stands as an emerging healthcare, education and advanced manufacturing centre. The city's economy is shifting quickly and despite experiencing the drawbacks of losing much of its heavy manufacturing, it is seeing much growth in other tertiary sectors, positioning itself as one of the leading non-capital Australian cities.       The Eastern beach is possibly the most beautiful part of Geelong! It always makes us feel content and happy when coming here! Our visit today was on a nice cool summer day with not a strong burning sun, so it was just amazing to walk all the Eastern beach from the carousel all the way to the bathing enclosure. On a holday like today, you can see many people walking up and down and having pic nics! The children’s pool was very busy today and children were having lots of fun. The big wheel is also an opportunity for something special there! If you are ever in Geelong, it is worth parking a bit away and enjoying a walk all along the seafront.

      Free camping in Geelong. Lovely bay views. See in the fireworks and wake up to a perfect day in Geelong. Happy new year!!!! Toilets, showers, cleaners, bbqs, massive bins all provided. For free.

      This beach is one of the most family friendly beaches at the coast. It’s got some smaller rock pools for toddlers and great spots to around reef to take a dive. Just be cautious when swimming or walking around the reef to not hurt your feet from sharp barnacles.

      Great nice and clean beach. The beach isn’t patrolled but it has a medium sized area to swim. Plenty of rocky areas which some kids love to jump off. This is also the spot where the hang gliders and paragliders land once they take off from Crackneck lookout. Toilets also at this location next to the carpark.

      The beach is a bit empty, I think so few population for a huge Australia continent. It is a rare asset when the whole ocean and beach is just for few visitors. Do not forget to bring your swimming clothes if you travel here or stop here in the summer. The blue sky is priceless and it is price free ?. For public toilets in Australia, I have no comment, so good compared to average and free too. However no chair , no coffee shop by the beach , so you need to bring with you .

      Fantastic fishing area and it’s always calm to come to the bay. The natural scene is even better. With the fantastic view and calm atmosphere, the Yarralumla Bay never disappoints. The only thing are the half-people high bushes – in summer, too much mozzi around.

      This place will bring your ordinary day to become extraordinary. Recommend for dog walking, surfing and any outdoor activity.

      Parking lots available or you can catch the buses to Custom House and walk down to the beach. Tram from Newcastle Beach is also another option for public transport.

      One of the best beaches in QLD.. even though finding a parking spot is hard during peak hours the beach accessibility is great. Lot of shops across the beach and walkways for nice evening walk. Need to be careful while walking because it’s a shared walkway..public shower facilities are available near to beach.. night views are really good as well….

      Really nice beach, very big, so many areas to swim between the flags. The beach is shallow, and you have to go out quite far before you can’t reach the bottom. Clean water as well. Sand is really soft and it’s great for making sand castles and other sculptures.

      Lying on the white sand and swimming with the waves are my ways of enjoying and connecting with mother nature in this clean and beautiful place. Playgrounds are ideal for families with kids. It’s only about 17km from the CBD. Parking is easy and clean as well. I can’t remember the number of times I’ve been here because they’re too many to remember.

      A great beach to take the family. Dunes are nice, plenty of grassed area over a kilometre or so just behind the dunes. Near the jetty is always pretty vibrant on the weekends. The sand bar near here makes a nicer/safer swimming spot for the kids at higher tides, as well as the water seems to be warmer there too.

      Spectacular spot to relax at the end of a big day, solo, or with friends and family. The grassy knoll is a fantastic spot for this occasion, being beautifully manicured and irrigated, soft turf. Nearby bars and cafes are perfect for a bite to eat or afternoon session. This is a must do if in the area. My first time watching the spectacular sunset over the Indian Ocean. AAA +++

      Lots of wide open spaces for playing frisbee or ball games. Three different beaches and one is allocated for your dog. Play equipment such as swings and slides, BBQ and picnic tables available, with ample parking in street or in privided car park. Toilets are medium clean, but usable.

      Unfortunately, we arrived at the low tide, and after a storm. Water was extremely dirty and muddy, thus ruining the day at the beach otherwise, this is a nice place to go with a family.

      A small but beautiful beach about around 45 minutes comfy train journey. And just 2 minutes walking distance from the train station. There are three tiny beaches here and what I saw was people were enjoying themselves with their family members, friends, etc. There was a small tourist market over there( local handmade goods are sold there) One of the beaches has small colorful changing rooms are there which is one of the attractions of this beach.

      It is definitely worth a visit! Just bring a jacket when visiting last week of December as it can be chilly. Make sure to have a phone with nice camera for the IG worthy pictures.

      The beach is nothing to shout about but the highlight were the small bathhouses. It’s quite cool to see so many different colors and designs but given the number of tourists.

      It’s a beautiful beach for photo-taking and sightseeing in Melbourne! Those colorful cabins on the beach were awesome and some of them had nice designs and paintings on the walls. The only thing is that there was a big construction site next to the beach, which was a bit annoying. Hopefully we can see the whole beach area again soon!
