Best time to shop at Op Shops Australia

Op shops, also known as thrift stores or charity shops, are a great place to find second-hand clothing, furniture, and other items at affordable prices. While these shops have regular opening hours throughout the year, there are certain times when they offer even better deals and selection. Here are some tips on the best time to shop at op shops in Australia:

    1. Seasonal Op Shop:

    • Spring Op Shop – Many people use the spring season to declutter their homes and donate their unwanted items to op shops. This means that you can often find a great selection of clothes, furniture, and household items during this time.
    • Summer Op Shop – Summer is another popular time for decluttering and donations, as people often take advantage of the warmer weather to clean out their homes. Look for summer clothing, outdoor gear, and picnic supplies during this time.
    • Fall Op Shop – Fall is a great time to find cozy sweaters, jackets, and other cold-weather clothing items. You may also come across Halloween costumes and decor in op shops during the fall season.
    • Winter Op Shop – Just like in the fall, winter is a good time to find warm clothing and accessories at op shops. Look for coats, hats, scarves, and gloves to keep you cozy during the colder months.

By shopping at op shops during the different seasons, you can take advantage of the items that are in high supply at that time. Whether you’re looking for spring dresses, summer beach gear, fall layers, or winter essentials, there’s likely to be a great selection at op shops throughout Australia.

The women working there have been incredibly rude on several occasions, both to myself and my partner, when we have been donating good quality items. Not sure if homophobia played a part but they were incredibly rude and disparaging, saying in earshot that they would not take anything from “someone who was dressed like that”. The donations, which were brand new, went to Hope charity store instead.

This was a really good vinnies despite being in a small town. They had a great selection of books, which were also organized by genre which is rare in op shops. There were also a variety of other good quality clothing and other items, but the books were particularly good. I found series such as the hunger games and twilight here, as well as Stephen King novels.

Went in to buy a pair of pants and they wanted $30 dollalrs a pair. Kmart sells cheaper new clothes Also noticed they had a Nintendo 64 for top asking price $350.00 ,so much for not for profit!

Large selection of second-hand clothes, ordinarily in very good condition, including hi-viz and other workwear. Some kitchenware but heavily skewed towards dainty knick knacks like porcelain jugs and lacking in items like basic saucepans. Decent selection of books. Some furniture, fabric and other items downstairs (stairs at rear of store protected by a child gate).

Would be helpful if they either put the phone back on the hook or stopped talking all the time. Been trying to contact this place for two weeks without success. All I need to know is which days they accept donations. Not loading up the car and driving into town if they are not available to open the delivery section.

Probably my overall favorite of Bathurst’s op shops. Friendly staff. Good selection of books, clothes and kitchen and other household items including some furniture. Much more space devoted to toys and other other items for kids and child-rearing than in the past.

How to Easily Locate an Op Shop Near Adelaide

    Vinnies in Adelaide
    Vinnies in Adelaide

If you’re looking to find an Op Shop (thrifty or charity store) near you in Adelaide, South Australia, Australia, there are several ways to go about it. Here are some suggestions:

    1. Online directories: Use online platforms or directories that specialize in listing Op Shops. Some popular options include:

    • OpShopDirectory: This website offers a comprehensive listing of Op Shops across Australia, including Adelaide. You can search the directory by location to find the closest options to you.
    • Salvos Stores: The Salvation Army has numerous Op Shops called “Salvos Stores” throughout Adelaide. Visit their website to find the locations and contact details of the stores near you.
    • Vinnies Shops: St Vincent de Paul Society, commonly known as Vinnies, also operates Op Shops in Adelaide. Check out their website for a list of stores in your area.

    2. Online maps and search engines: Popular search engines like Google Maps can be helpful in finding Op Shops near you. Simply search for “Op Shops near me” or “thrifty stores in Adelaide”, and you should see a map with relevant listings. You can also read reviews and see opening hours on these platforms.

    3. Local newspapers and community notice boards: Check your local newspapers or community notice boards for advertisements or listings of Op Shops in your area. Sometimes, these stores might not have a significant online presence, but they will advertise through traditional mediums.

    4. Word of mouth: Ask friends, family, and colleagues if they know of any good Op Shops in Adelaide. Recommendations from people you trust can often lead you to unique or lesser-known stores that might not be widely listed online.

Remember, Op Shops often have a rotating inventory, so it’s a good idea to call ahead to check if they have the items you’re looking for. Additionally, many Op Shops support charitable causes, so shopping at these stores not only helps you find affordable treasures but also contributes to important community initiatives.

This store is super stingy and overpriced. The store manager wouldn’t lower a price on a top that apparently was “just put on the rack” that smelled strongly of BO. Another dress I tried on smelled literally of old lady. THEY DO NOT WASH THE CLOTHES BEFORE PUTTING THEM ON THE RACKS. THE STORE MANAGER ADVISED ME OF THIS HIMSELF. He said I would have to wash clothes if I bought them from a regular store and I said yes but they don’t normally smell of BO and these clothes are donated so there’s a huge difference. Visit another store don’t go here.

Honestly if you wanna buy cheap electronics just save up to get a brand new one because I just spend 3 days going back and forth to this place to exchange a $12 heater that wasn’t working to another heater of the same price that seemed like it was working but after 1 minute it was turning off and turning back on every 20 minutes and after all that they just told me they can’t do refunds… I can use my hair blow drier to warm up my room better than the ones they have.? P.S just an advice, if anything you get from there doesn’t work, just get a refund straight away because if you ask for an exchange they won’t let you get a refund after that.

Great Experience, Great Range of items, though not a thrift store as such. The prices have risen, I paid $17 for a plain jumper just to stay warm. Though there are definitely those hidden gems to look for as always!

They don’t actually give low prices for students, I remember struggling to pay for a button up shirt for interviews here 6 years ago, the lady didn’t believe I was a student and she said some gaslighting comments. Better off buying brand new and supporting the commercial industry rather than this ‘Charity’

Good size store with lots of stock. Quite a large range of men’s and ladies clothing. We had a good wander around the store and bought some bric a brac. The customer service was good. Would visit more often if this op Op shop was in our area.

Mmmm, volunteers as usual are great, the paid managers who work towards their sales figures and bonus are not No eye contact, no greeting, no anything ( I guess they had already formed an opinion of a Salvo shopper in port Adelaide ) I did though thank them for their talking at me It is very disappointing to see selected managers chosen for their non empathy but commitment to KPIs and churning over volunteer staff Yes the Sslvos do great work, but they need to review some basics of how you are perceived in the front line

The Manager was lovely, and helpful. She brought it to my attention and graciously offered a 20% Discount on my purchased item because I was entitled a concession. In my opinion regardless, the money spent on the premises goes to a good cause.

Very rare to find something worth its charitable pricing. Many Salvos must not be aware of our current economy…. Please remind them that the prices are not fair for donated items this isn’t the concept designer clearance factory they like to pitch it as.

The shop manager is one lady with a big attitude problem. plus she is racist. plus everything in shop is overpriced considering they get all their stock for free.like I can go to Kmart buy a flannel shirt for $6 go to the Salvos you pay $12 for the same thing considering it is second hand . Is it a charity store or is it a retail store? ?

Great value and selection of clothes and bric n brac. Well organised due to Covid. Very sweet and helpful staff. Only ONE complaint. The hangers say one size but the clothes on them are different. Also there is no organisation of clothes into size categories…they just hung up. This means if you are strapped for time you won’t browse long. Other than that, I scored some great clothes.

Bought this lovely teapot for $12. I like Vinnies’ busniess idea to receive donations, then resell them and use the revenue to donate to people in need. Keep doing the good job Vinnies!

I like this shop more than Lifeline upstair. Prices are not super cheap. A book is $5 and a small plush toy is $2. However I can still find something worth buying at acceptable prices.

To get there, it is better by car. There is a bus stop nearby though.

Parking outside…nicely displayed…nice customer service…only give it 4 strata not 5 because like other Op shop these days much of the stuff is overpriced. For example they sell Anko branded stuff ( Kmart brand) at the retail price. I go there for book.

Prices are a joke. Have to feel sorry for those in need trying to shop when this store marks up the price of Kmart clothes for more than they’d cost brand new. Do better

This place is great for ornaments. I saw a blue mountains pottery dolphin which was lovely. I found some great baskets and bunnies for an Easter egg hunt. I bought a beautiful amber necklace. This shop is great for shoes. I also like the way that the staff label the Manchester and bedding with sizes. It is so helpful knowing if the quilt is a double or a queen. I found a great set of drawers with a lamp and sweet boat too. It’s well worth a visit to this store!

Good some days, bad on others. Terrible car park. Unfortunately, there is a gate keeper who gives a big smile if you buy something and a scowl if you try to donate. I won’t be back because the bad experiences are depressing.

When I went today they were overwhelmed as a big Salvos collection truck had arrived. So I had to extricate my car from there and didn’t get a chance to browse (their book selection has been great in the past). At Vinnies in Dural I was told “these items will sell!”, so I was able to unload everything in my car except the electrical goods, which Vinnies doesn’t accept. Perhaps a Salvos in some other city will get those eventually if someone I know happens to be driving a good long distance and has space in their car.

I love this opshop, not small, but not overwhelming either. Great selection of everything. Was so excited to pick up this vintage silk nightie for $1.50 (it was discounted). Yes, it had some stains, but I got most of them out, and for such a beautiful piece it was worth it. Staff are friendly and cheerful.

Used to be awesome. Not sure if there’s been a change of management or policy, but there is less than half the amount of stock now, and it’s no wonder why. In the 10 minutes I was there, I saw 3 volunteers end their shift carrying out giant bags of items directly from the sorting area. Would be really nice if the donated items could at least hit the floor first to allow customers a chance to see them first. All the stock on the floor was in average condition with high price tags, meanwhile the volunteers were buying up all the high quality items for bargain prices. Such a shame as it was the best op shop in Sydney once upon a time.

What to Consider When Visiting an Op Shop in Busselton

    Mates Op Shop in Busselton
    Mates Op Shop in Busselton

When going to a thrift store in Australia, there are a few things to consider in order to make the most of your shopping experience.

    1. Location: Consider the location of the thrift store you plan to visit. Some stores may be in more affluent areas, which could mean a greater selection of higher-end items. On the other hand, stores in less affluent areas may offer more affordable prices.

    2. Timing: Thrift stores often receive new inventory daily or weekly. To increase your chances of finding unique and in-demand items, visit the store on a regular basis. Additionally, consider going early in the morning when stores first open, as this is when new inventory is typically put out.

    3. Quality: Check the quality of the items you are interested in purchasing. Inspect clothing for any tears, stains, or missing buttons. For furniture and appliances, make sure they are in good working order.

    4. Pricing: While thrift stores are known for their affordable prices, it’s still important to consider the pricing of items. Some stores may have fixed pricing, while others may have special discounts or sales. Compare prices between different thrift stores to ensure you are getting the best deal.

    5. Donation: Consider donating items you no longer need or want. Many thrift stores in Australia rely on donations to support their operations. By donating, you are not only helping a good cause but also making room for new finds in your own home.

    • Location: Choose a thrift store in a location that suits your preferences and budget.
    • Timing: Visit the store regularly and consider going early in the morning for new inventory.
    • Quality: Inspect clothing, furniture, and appliances for any defects or issues.
    • Pricing: Compare prices between different thrift stores and look for special discounts or sales.
    • Donation: Consider donating items you no longer need or want to support the thrift store.

The best op shop in Busselton. Visited 30/08/2023 Clothes are clean (I suspect they might wash their items before putting them on the racks), did not see any stains or mark on anything! Shoes were all either perfect or good condition (no trashed shoes for sale), same with their bags and purses. They have a great range of small nicknacks in cube baskets (new socks, soaps, party supplies, craft items, new knee braces) and a great book corner. Good quality furniture. Staff were having a good time behind the counter, chatting and very friendly. Change rooms were spotless and the entire store’s cleanliness was A+ Prices were higher than other op shops in Busselton, starting from $4-5 per article up to $10-12.

Neat, tidy and organized. However the selection is pretty average and the prices relative to the Salvos is much higher, think they should drop prices and process more sales. The sign out the front said we are full and not accepting anymore donations of items.

Overpriced and bare shelves yet turning away donations? I compared other opp shop’s same day around town, had more stock and lower prices. People go to these locations to save money and at the same time support others so come on guys do forget why you’re there. Last year and year before you had much more displayed and more reasonable prices.

Tips for First-Time Op Shop Visitors in Australia

If you’re planning on visiting an op shop (thrift store) in Australia for the first time, here are some tips to make your experience more enjoyable and successful:

    • Research the op shop before visiting. Look up their opening hours, location, and any special promotions or events they may have. This will help you plan your visit and make the most of your time there.
    • Bring cash. While some op shops may accept card payments, many may only accept cash. It’s always a good idea to have some small notes and coins on hand.
    • Go with a shopping list or specific items in mind. Op shops can be overwhelming with their vast selection of items. Having a list or specific items in mind will help you stay focused and make it easier to find what you’re looking for.
    • Take your time and be patient. Op shops can be messy and disorganized, so it may take some time to find what you’re looking for. Take your time and browse through the racks and shelves thoroughly. You never know what hidden gems you may find!
    • Inspect the items before purchasing. Since op shop items are pre-loved, it’s important to inspect them for any damage or defects before purchasing. Check for stains, rips, missing buttons, or broken zippers. Some op shops may not accept returns or offer refunds, so it’s better to be thorough before making a purchase.
    • Don’t be afraid to negotiate. Unlike regular retail stores, op shops may be willing to negotiate on prices, especially if you’re buying multiple items or if an item has been in the store for a while. It never hurts to ask!
    • Donate your unwanted items. Op shops rely on donations to keep their stock replenished. If you have any unwanted items that are in good condition, consider donating them to the op shop you’re visiting. It’s a great way to give back and support a good cause.

With these tips in mind, you’ll be well-prepared for your first op shop adventure in Australia. Happy shopping!

Massive floor space that as a general rule is very nicely set out and has a great feel to it. Well lit and has decent space between sections.

My one real complaint is that all sizing is lumped together, with plus sizes separate to 14-16 & below, so you need to give yourself time to go through everything.

They have literally everything with ladieswear being the biggest stock, plenty of shoes & accessories.

It’s a really lovely space, well set out and worth a visit, just give yourself plenty of time .

      Parking onsite which is great

Twice recently i have taken donations here and both times the blokes who were at the drop off area where rude. The first time they were busy because they had just opened but he still didnt have to be rude in his tone. And this second time i pulled up and i smiled and was friendly as i always am and he just said what in it (i had boxes) i explained and hes like “over there” he sat there watching me. And was very rude in his tone. I do not like their customer service. There is never any reason to be rude in such a way.

Carpark is just pure kaos – a fair warning it’s often full and takes far too much maneuvering – prices are average / on the high side, the renovation is nice and all but just loses that op shop experience and is too ‘corporate’ not one that we visit often for those reasons.

NASTIEST AND RUDEST staff member. Firstly I walked into the wrong area because I’d never been there before and was yelled at by a lady “you can’t come in here”….. I apologised and then told her I’d never been there before and didn’t know where to go. Upon leaving I grabbed 2 large bags from my car I was donating, and handed them to an older man at the front who was loading donation bags!

He snatched it off me and I said “be careful it’s heavy”! He quickly snapped at me and said “when you donate to a charity can you be a bit more thoughtful and not make the bags so heavy??? We’re all getting older here”!!!”..

I was shocked. I then when to my car to donate a smaller bag and asked him when to put it. He rudely said to me “just put it there” and stormed off!!! I couldn’t BELIEVE how rude he was especially because the clothes I was donating were BRAND NEW, TOP QUALITY dresses and shoes! Maybe say “Thankyou” next time you rude man! Kindness goes a long way! Aren’t you in the volunteer business?

Specifically to their Containers For Change section…certain staff just cannot count accurately. The amount of double handling is ridiculous. So I tried the bag and drop system with them and didn’t get even a quarter of my money back. When I inquired they pointed at a massive pile of bagged bottles and said maybe it was there or maybe the bag broke. I called the scheme and they promised my refund. I only received a token amount. So decided to give them one last chance. First time went ok. Second time they miscounted again! Worst part is that they throw them into the bays so quickly that you cannot demand a recount. In frustration I went to Tomra. Such a dream in comparison. Can’t get miscounted there. Its all automated. And even when it is busy there is room to move and it is still much quicker because you don’t have to sort anything and you don’t have to take the lids off your bottles and you don’t get all sticky and dirty. AND their disabled park is right near the door.

I think it’s appalling the amount Lifeline are charging on items when you can go to Kmart and get items if not the same but cheaper!

It’s a charity store ripping off the poor, how do you expect the poor to be able to afford those prices(dog blankets $10-$30, children clothing $10+ an item & I’d hate to know adults clothing prices!) no matter what brand the item is does not matter because that means nothing to the poor that need warm clothing or blankets for there familys!

I’m absolutely disgusted in the Lifeline stores!!

What to Consider When Visiting an Op Shop in Warrnambool

    Vinnies in Warrnambool
    Vinnies in Warrnambool

When going to a thrift store in Australia, there are several things to consider to ensure a successful and enjoyable shopping experience. Whether you’re looking for unique vintage pieces, affordable clothing, or hidden gems, these considerations can help make your thrift store adventure a success.

First and foremost, it’s important to have an idea of what you’re looking for before entering the thrift store. Thrift stores can be overwhelming with the amount of items they carry, so having a general idea of what you need or want can help you navigate through the aisles more efficiently.

Another important consideration is to set a budget. While thrift stores often have affordable prices, it’s still easy to get carried away and overspend. Setting a budget beforehand can help you stay on track and prevent any impulse purchases.

In addition to setting a budget, it’s also important to consider the condition of the items you’re interested in purchasing. While some thrift stores have strict quality control measures, others may not. Take the time to carefully inspect items for any damages, stains, or signs of wear. This will help you avoid purchasing items that may not last long or require extensive repairs.

Lastly, don’t be afraid to haggle or negotiate prices. Thrift stores often have a bit of flexibility when it comes to pricing, especially if an item has been sitting on the shelves for a while. Polite and respectful negotiation can sometimes lead to a better deal.

Overall, going to a thrift store in Australia can be a fun and rewarding experience. By considering these factors, you can increase your chances of finding unique and affordable treasures. Happy thrifting!

Things to Consider When Going to a Thrift Store in Australia:

    • Have an idea of what you’re looking for before entering.
    • Set a budget to prevent overspending.
    • Inspect items for any damages or signs of wear.
    • Don’t be afraid to haggle or negotiate prices.

A pretty good sized store, well organised, friendly staff on the day I was there, and they don’t forget they’re selling pre-loved stuff (i.e. people’s old stuff) when they’re pricing. Or to put it more clearly, they don’t overprice. Picked up some great bargains.

Here are some common products you can find at op shops in Australia:

    • Clothing: Op shops are known for their extensive range of second-hand clothing for men, women, and children. You can find a variety of clothing items including shirts, pants, dresses, jackets, and shoes. The clothing is often in good condition and can be a cost-effective way to update your wardrobe.

Lovley shop with some reasonably priced items, biggest negative is the two larger guys I’ve met on occasions when making donations, they have a serious attitude problem and are put out if you donate items that then need to be sorted. I.e a bag with mixed items. No thanks just disgruntled huffing and puffing. They may be volunteering but manners cost nothing.

I shared my experience yesterday which I can not find now strange anyway St vinnies was selling the item the same as the normal shop price I pointed it out as it is suppose to be that bit more affordable for the people the man was rude so I call the manager Kim in the Cranbourne store the next day and told her what happened she just did not want to know what a joke this is not for the way they should treat people I will never donate or be in their store again

So here we go ! . I wasn’t sure where to post this but given it’s the same organization, it’s best here.

Your church, charity, business, run’s soup vans, I see one regularly at Narre Warren! . I assume it’s origin he’s something to do with your Cranbury op shop

One of your clients, recently seriously assaulted me , causing injuries which can’t be fixed I guess being a church you believe in the religious ideology of ” saving” all people even if evil

I will make it clear, thus assault wasn’t in the presence of your van membes , nor were they in the area, However , your church as another in Narre Warren, helps violent junkies, mental health patients , ex crims, etc . The person who assaulted me is regularly given free food by vinnies

Why are you helping the lowest of the low, of society? I have also posted a review about another local place who helps him . I will not accept, excuses like drug and alcohol use, mental health, a.d.h.d , he was bullied at school, mummy didn’t love him .

Plenty of people, have issues and aren’t violent , your van along with another organization shouldn’t be allowed to set up around a commercial shopping centre precinct, given some of the clientele you serve

I certainly won’t donate even $1 to , any church based charity ever

Isn’t it ironic? , How Centrelink pays junkies DSP , yet they can’t work

They’re fit enough though to attack a senior, I’m in that age range .. If vinnies aren’t happy with my review tough I don’t intend on removing it The attack your client committed, is on camera , but won’t be reported what hope do I have of justice, when Vinnie’s and transit church will just take a clients side

Vinnie’s appreciate the goods that I donate, they don’t throw out 90% of what you donate like Salvo,s do.. Sale prices are reasonable too if your a buyer.. I had quite a few bad experiences whilst trying to donate good new clothes at Salvo store in Cranbourne Nth, especially when I discovered most of my donations ended up in the dumpster…. just disgusted I was.. I was in Salvo store a few days ago, all you could hear is the staff in the back room smashing things that were kindly donated by genuine public being smashed in the bins..

Great place to shop and they have huge collections as well. Also, I like that they have 3 fitting rooms!

This shop has the best stock among all the opportunity shops I have been to. Doesn’t look like one either. So clean and well presented. They have brand new stock as well, at affordable prices, and the staff and volunteers are very friendly and helpful. I always had an amazing experience shopping here.

Absolutely huge! You never know what you’ll find here. They have a massive variety of things and their prices appear to be fair.

Beautiful hidden little gem, has a beautiful range of stock and not over priced like the others. Only down side is getting in and out of the tight car parks.

This is another good Salvos I visited. I bought an oversized men’s shirt with huge front pockets for $10, which looks similar to current Louis Vuitton Resort 2023 collection. Totally a good find! Staffs are very lovely too.

I absolutely love this op shop, I always walk out with a bargain and they have a large variety of items. The staff went above and beyond for me one time, allowing me to purchase a beautiful shelving unit that they were using (which I replaced with something that wasn’t as nice) Reading the older reviews, I think people confuse this Salvation Army op shop with the large Salvo’s op shop on Sth Gippsland Hwy.
