The local beach is a serene and picturesque destination that offers a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The breathtaking scenery, with its clean sands and crystal-clear waters, creates a postcard-worthy backdrop for relaxation. The gentle sound of crashing waves and the warm sea breeze add to the soothing atmosphere. However, during peak times such as sunny weekends, it can get a bit crowded, which may diminish the sense of serenity. Despite this occasional drawback, the beach remains a beloved spot for surfing, fishing, swimming, and enjoying lazy picnics with friends and family. Love it that it is so close to many restaurants and local shops as well.

Beautiful Beach when the sun is out and not too windy. We went on a Monday and there were a lot of people loathing around for some good sun and fun. We went for a walk to the clock tower and back. When it is very windy, the sand is on your face. We saw the public walking their dogs along this sandy beach. You do not have to pay to visit this beach but finding a car park would be challenging.

Makara Beach Walkway in Wellington, New Zealand
Makara Beach Walkway
Address: 1099 Makara Road, Mākara Beach, Wellington 6972, New Zealand
This is a fun walk with a variety of experiences throughout. A bit of fitness needed as the initial part is a continuous climb where it can get quite steep at times. But the climb is beautiful with grassland at first and then an amazing view of the coast from the cliffs. We saw the South Island and Mana Island quite easily. The climb continues to the old garrison and the windmill. From there the walk goes downhill through a cemented road. When we got to the sea level we rested by a small stream before heading to the coastal walk back. The coastal walk is fun with lots of marine life to observe. The sandy and rocky walk is not my favourite part but the terrain is pretty flat at this stage. The last bend on the coast requires going through some big rocks, and will need some care to walk through. All in all a great walk!

This is amazing place to hike. You can see panorama sea view on top of the mountain. Easy hike. The old bunkers (world war 2) cover the full sea view. Still have accsess to go one bunker inside 3 of them. Bring water bottle if you going with kids.

The climb to the top was very steep and pretty windy so it was quite daunting but views were worth it. Loved that I could enjoy the green fields of the mountains and the waves of the coastline too. My favourite walk so far close to Wellington in terms of views but I found the climb (although short) quite challenging even with average fitness level, so something to consider esp for those with weak knees!

I highly recommend bringing a BBQ to enjoy a sunny day meal right by the sea. The atmosphere is relaxing and it’s great for kids to play around. Plus, the sunset views are breathtaking. Fantastic flat beach. Walk a mile or more! Video shot at low tide, at north end, near the river. No fees. Dogs are limited to the south end of the beach. Plenty of parking in several areas. The park provides toilets, changing rooms, grassy areas, camping, picnic tables, plenty of shade. Bring an umbrella for shade on the beach. (Update 2024) Note to less able-bodied: several of the beach access points have been washed out.

What can I say about Illawong Beach? It is a beach. At low tide it strecthes for kilometres of sand. As a beach it is pretty boring. I noticed on my a visit a team of people were cleaning and pruning and making fences and planting shrubs. It might look a little prettier one day but it is still a boring beach.

This region’s long sandy beaches and tidal swings up to seven metres / 21 feet and down to almost zero when the ocean recedes for about one kilometre have few equals, globally. Visitors from a distance can be gob-smacked!
No surf for regular surfing, but many go kite-surfing for quite a distance along the beaches
Add the nearby blue water Pioneer River that is unique, nationally, and globally, when the majority are muddy and brown.

I have been a long time customer of this park and in the past I have always found it to be a great place to stay, but not this time. The standard of cleanliness and maintenance has declined. The first cabin we were checked into was definitely not ready as it was dirty, did not have a clean smell about it and the air-conditioner had been pulled apart with the filter laying on the bench and the cover leaning against the bed. I had an immediate asthma attack because the place was so dirty. I notified reception and was then given the cabin next door which was also smelly and dirty. I refused to stay in such an unclean cabin, so I was given a third cabin which was marginally better but by no means clean! There was dust on all of the ledges and window sills, cracked tiles in the bathroom and food residue on the cutlery. I attempted to show photos to the person at the check-in counter but they were not interested in looking at them. She stated that they had recently changed cleaning products! This uncleanliness has nothing to do with cleaning products! This will be the last time I stay at this park after coming here for approx 10 years because it is no longer a clean environment for me to stay.

This is not the place for a quiet overnight stay – Bruce Highway trucks pass the front gate all night – and the Main Rail Line over the back gate. Noise cancelling headphones recommended.
Please install some workshop fans in the amenities – they are literally sauna like. It’s cheap, it’s easy, and it’s just smart.

We spent the night of 12/24/23 in this campsite, we are a family of 5 and only 4 beds were made.
I call the reception and they tell me that the sheets are on the bed and if I want a doona I have to come and collect it from reception.
I didn’t know that when you booked an accommodation you had to make your bed..
Air conditioning cover does not hold so we saw the dirt on the filters, the curtain rods in the bedrooms falling, dirty windows.
No shampoo or shower gel are offered.
I do not recommend at all.
