Melbourne ( MEL-bərn; Boonwurrung/Woiwurrung: Narrm or Naarm) is the capital of the Australian state of Victoria and the second-most populous city in Australia, after Sydney (although the most populous by contiguous urban area). Its name generally refers to a 9,993 km2 (3,858 sq mi) metropolitan area known as Greater Melbourne, comprising an urban agglomeration of 31 local municipalities, although the name is also used specifically for the local municipality of City of Melbourne based around its central business area.
The metropolis occupies much of the northern and eastern coastlines of Port Phillip Bay and spreads into the Mornington Peninsula, part of West Gippsland, as well as the hinterlands towards the Yarra Valley, the Dandenong Ranges, and the Macedon Ranges. Melbourne has a population over 5 million (19% of the population of Australia, as of the 2021 census), mostly residing to the east of the city centre, and its inhabitants are commonly referred to as "Melburnians".The area of Melbourne has been home to Aboriginal Victorians for over 40,000 years and serves as an important meeting place for local Kulin nation clans. Of the five peoples of the Kulin nation, the traditional custodians of the land encompassing Melbourne are the Boonwurrung, Wathaurong and the Wurundjeri peoples. A short-lived penal settlement was built in 1803 at Port Phillip, then part of the British colony of New South Wales. However, it was not until 1835, with the arrival of free settlers from Van Diemen's Land (modern-day Tasmania), that Melbourne was founded. It was incorporated as a Crown settlement in 1837, and named after William Lamb, 2nd Viscount Melbourne, who was then Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. In 1851, four years after Queen Victoria declared it a city, Melbourne became the capital of the new colony of Victoria. During the 1850s Victorian gold rush, the city entered a lengthy boom period that, by the late 1880s, had transformed it into one of the world's largest and wealthiest metropolises. After the federation of Australia in 1901, Melbourne served as the interim seat of government of the new nation until Canberra became the permanent capital in 1927. Today, it is a leading financial centre in the Asia-Pacific region and ranked 32nd globally in the March 2022 Global Financial Centres Index.Melbourne is home of many of Australia's best-known landmarks, such as the Melbourne Cricket Ground, the National Gallery of Victoria and the World Heritage-listed Royal Exhibition Building. Noted for its cultural heritage, the city gave rise to Australian rules football, Australian impressionism and Australian cinema, and has more recently been recognised as a UNESCO City of Literature and a global centre for street art, live music and theatre. It hosts major annual international events, such as the Australian Grand Prix and the Australian Open, and also hosted the 1956 Summer Olympics. Melbourne consistently ranked as the world's most liveable city for much of the 2010s.Melbourne Airport, also known as the Tullamarine Airport, is the second-busiest airport in Australia, and the Port of Melbourne is the nation's busiest seaport. Its main metropolitan rail terminus is Flinders Street station and its main regional rail and road coach terminus is Southern Cross station. It also has Australia's most extensive freeway network and the largest urban tram network in the world.

Love the vibe here. Easy access via tram (for tourist). You can get really good foods like seafood, pastries, coffee here! As their closing time is 4pm, the foods in most of the popular food store might sold out around 3 or 3:30. So be there earlier ?

Popular with locals and tourists. Wide variety of fresh seafood, meat, cheeses and pasta and many other things like shops selling pots and pans, florists, clothing. The eateries offered a great variety of food too.

In every country there’s bound to be a market and eatery crowd and tourist magnet. In Melbourne CBD, this is one of a handful of them that’s worth a visit. Don’t be daunted by the crowd. Walk around and savour the smell of whatever is cooking or buy whatever produce that’s in season. Good accessibility with public transport nearby. Dine in the food hall or alfresco.

I prefer the Victoria Farmers market. This one was a bit too small and seemed overly focused on goods instead of foods and agricultural products.

I like it because you can find and support the entrepreneurs and small business owners but the main food market was like a grocery store and then the other food sales and some small goods shops and restaurants weren’t accessible from the inside, you had to circle the building to get to them.

The mall section and a seafood restaurant and coffee shop they had were really nice. I’d say stick with Victoria Farmers Market if trying to decide. But both are better than only supporting Coles and Woolworths.

After visiting the stalls head up the escalators to the food court and visit “off the rack” (this is a womens clothing store) for more bargain shopping on the day we were there 30 Jan 2024 new dresses were as low as $20 AUD each.

Great place to shop for souvenirs. Not for other things. Souvenirs here good price, value for money and wide range of varieties

The souvenirs section occupy about 80% of the market. Seafood section is very small 5%. Meat only 5%. Fruits and vege 10%.

Good place for tourists to buy Australia souvenirs at less price. You can pretty much find all the gift items you see in popular tourist spots like Sydney tower, zoo, etc. You can also find lots of stores to buy nice toys, puzzles and activities for kids for less price here. There are some electronics shops and clothes too but I felt they are not that many and that good.

This market is okay. You can purchase souvenirs, clothes and shoes. Most of the sellers are not friendly. There are tons of merchandise. They have electronics as well. You can also purchase produce. We purchased a pack of Keychains for only $5. They had cute I ❤️ Sydney t-shirts and purses. It is located at the Ground floor of Market City. I would go just for the experience. It is located in China town.

The 10 Biggest Local Market in Darwin, Australia

Darwin, a vibrant city in the Northern Territory of Australia, is renowned for its multicultural atmosphere and lively markets. Among the many attractions that draw visitors to Darwin are its local markets, which offer a unique blend of local produce, artisan crafts, and cultural experiences.

From bustling food markets to charming craft fairs, Darwin’s local markets provide a glimpse into the city’s diverse heritage and vibrant community. Whether you’re looking for fresh organic produce, handcrafted souvenirs, or a taste of local delicacies, there’s sure to be a market that caters to your interests.

Top Local Market in Darwin, Australia

Darwin ( DAR-win; Larrakia: Garramilla) is the capital city of the Northern Territory, Australia. With a population of 139,902 at the 2021 census, the city contains most of the sparsely populated Northern Territory's residents. It is the smallest, wettest, and most northerly of the Australian capital cities and serves as the Top End's regional centre.
Darwin's proximity to Southeast Asia makes it a key link between Australia and countries such as Indonesia and East Timor. The Stuart Highway begins in Darwin and extends southerly across central Australia through Tennant Creek and Alice Springs, concluding in Port Augusta, South Australia. The city is built upon a low bluff overlooking Darwin Harbour. Darwin's suburbs begin at Lee Point in the north and stretch to Berrimah in the east. The Stuart Highway extends to Darwin's eastern satellite city of Palmerston and its suburbs.
The Darwin region, like much of the Top End, has a tropical climate, with a wet and dry season. A period known locally as "the build up" leading up to Darwin's wet season sees temperature and humidity increase. Darwin's wet season typically arrives in late November to early December and brings with it heavy monsoonal downpours, spectacular lightning displays, and increased cyclone activity. During the dry season, the city has clear skies and mild sea breezes from the harbour.
The Larrakia people are the traditional owners of the Darwin area and Aboriginal people are a significant proportion of the population. On 9 September 1839, HMS Beagle sailed into Darwin Harbour during its survey of the area. John Clements Wickham named the region "Port Darwin" in honour of their former shipmate Charles Darwin, who had sailed with them on the ship's previous voyage. The settlement there became the town of Palmerston in 1869, but was renamed Darwin in 1911. The city has been almost entirely rebuilt four times, following devastation caused by a cyclone in 1897, another one in 1937, Japanese air raids during World War II, and Cyclone Tracy in 1974.

Rapid Creek Market is a delightful spot for weekend veggie and fruit shopping. The market’s vibrant atmosphere makes it a go-to place, especially with its fantastic coffee booth and delightful croissants. While the absence of the Indian stall was noticed, the samosas from there were definitely a highlight. It’s a pity they weren’t available this time. Overall, the market remains a top choice for fresh produce and enjoyable weekend treats, although it would be great to see the return of the Indian stall soon for those delicious samosas.

Come here for exotic tropical fruits in late January, Dragon fruit, Mangoes, Sugar apples, Soursop, Guavas all sorts, Rambutans, breadfruit, sugar apples, longans and passionfruit to name a few. Compared to The other mob up the road at parap markets this one is the Fresh grown fruits and veg one. Come here on a Saturday but not around 1:15pm as there are less vendors and they are packing up. Note some vendors if not most are cash only.

If you’re in the area, don’t miss the opportunity to grab a bite at this place. Everything we ate was so fresh and tasted fantastic. The service deserves a standing ovation. The girl at the counter was an absolute delight to chat with. She helped us by suggesting what we should try and went above and beyond to accommodate our dietary preferences. You’re an amazing person, and we are delighted to have become acquainted with you

The cold platter was as expected, prawns were nice and tasty, oysters were good but not as pungent. The grilled swordfish had the right flavours except the middle part was a bit over. The highlight though were the chips, which had a good amount of crunch and seasoning. Seating was quite limited, so make sure you find a spot after ordering.

Used to go all the time when they were operating at their old location a few doors down. But a move just down the block has seemed to change almost everything about the business. The different layout is fine but they seem to stock less than what they used to, even though this place is larger, and they don’t seem to stock what I used to buy at the location. I’ve switched to Wan long and would only come here if I really needed to.

Enough is enough. I am no longer shopping here and shopping at Wan Long instead. Their body language demonstrates they do not appreciate their customers. The two ladies at the counter are extremely rude and do not have any manners.

If I am possible to give 0 stars I will definitely do so. The 2 old women were so rude. They do not even answer my questions, but when we finish paying the items in counter she tries to blame us stealing their item as we actually bought in Coles. After we provide a receipt from Coles they did not even say sorry and thanks. Goodbye, even we live nearby, we will definitely not going to come back. It is better for us to drive to Sydney to buy some Asian product.

??????Our family loves the SG Asian Supermarket, it is one of few places I can get egg-FREE mayo without mustard. Parking is not far away, easy walk mostly to shop (just watch out for uneven road, not shops fault). I love that I can find many herbs and spices, husband and daughter love getting their Japanese food, I love that he can continue sharing his Japanese heritage with our daughter. Convenient location in town and we don’t have to travel to QLD or order online. Staff are lovely and friendly.

Awesome Kim Chi, as well as loads of other Asian and Indian goodies. Nice friendly helpful woman who runs the place. Glad to see that although they were flooded out, they’ve set up shop at their house in Goonellabah. Hope people will support them from there until they can re-establish a store.
