USS Yorktown (CV-5) was an aircraft carrier that served in the United States Navy during World War II. Named after the Battle of Yorktown in 1781, she was commissioned in 1937. Yorktown was the lead ship of the Yorktown class, which was designed on the basis of lessons learned from operations with the converted battlecruisers of the Lexington class and the smaller purpose-built USS Ranger.
Yorktown was at port in Norfolk during the attack on Pearl Harbor, having just completed a patrol of the Atlantic Ocean. She then sailed to San Diego in late December 1941 and was incorporated as the flagship of Task Force 17. Together with the carrier Lexington, she successfully attacked Japanese shipping off the east coast of New Guinea in early March 1942. Her aircraft sank or damaged several warships supporting the invasion of Tulagi in early May. Yorktown rendezvoused with Lexington in the Coral Sea and attempted to stop the invasion of Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. They sank the light aircraft carrier Shōhō on 7 May during the Battle of the Coral Sea, but did not encounter the main Japanese force of the carriers Shōkaku and Zuikaku until the next day. Aircraft from Lexington and Yorktown badly damaged Shōkaku, but the Japanese aircraft critically damaged Lexington (which was later scuttled), and damaged Yorktown.
Despite the damage suffered, Yorktown was able to return to Hawaii. Although estimates were that the damage would take two weeks to repair, Yorktown put to sea only 72 hours after entering drydock at Pearl Harbor, which meant that she was available for the next confrontation with the Japanese. Yorktown played an important part in the Battle of Midway in early June. Yorktown's aircraft played crucial roles in sinking two Japanese fleet carriers. Yorktown also absorbed both Japanese aerial counterattacks at Midway which otherwise would have been directed at the carriers USS Enterprise and Hornet. On 4 June, during the Battle of Midway, Japanese aircraft crippled Yorktown. She lost all power and developed a 23-degree list to port. Salvage efforts on Yorktown were encouraging, and she was taken in tow by USS Vireo. In the late afternoon of 6 June, the Japanese submarine I-168 fired a salvo of torpedoes, two of which struck Yorktown, and a third sinking the destroyer USS Hammann, which had been providing auxiliary power to Yorktown. With further salvage efforts deemed hopeless, the remaining repair crews were evacuated from Yorktown, which sank on the morning of 7 June. The wreck of Yorktown was located in May 1998 by Robert Ballard.

Have been continuously going there but the AC is just not what I wanted like it should be cold and not hot and the projection of the movies weren’t going well. Also there should be more than 1 cinema in Port Moresby, like maybe 2 or 3.It should be strict, like no taking out your phone snaping yourself while the movie is on,like we want a dark room with no lights.Otherwise it’s great the movies are okay and the food??

Need to fix projector and ac. Screen became too bright and then too dark on its own. Not sure if that was on purpose but ruined the film. AC kept going on and off in its own aswell.

Overall I’d say they do deliver.. The seats are comfortable and well ventilated. The only downsides are the price of the snacks and beverages and a new projector would be a great upgrade

The staff were kind and helpful. However, they don’t have a 3D cinema anymore. Some movies need to be experienced in 3D.

The Manus Regional Processing Centre, or Manus Island Regional Processing Centre (MIRCP), was one of a number of offshore Australian immigration detention facilities. The centre was located on the PNG Navy Base Lombrum (previously a Royal Australian Navy base called HMAS Tarangau) on Los Negros Island in Manus Province, Papua New Guinea.
It was originally established in 2001, along with Nauru Regional Processing Centre, as an "offshore processing centre" (OPC) as part of the Pacific Solution policy created by the Howard government. After falling into disuse in 2003, it was formally closed by the first Rudd government in 2008, but reopened by the Gillard government in 2012. As part of the PNG Solution by the second Rudd government, it was announced in July 2013 that those sent to PNG would never be resettled in Australia. After Tony Abbott became PM in a change of government a few months later, the government announced its Operation Sovereign Borders policy, aimed at stopping maritime arrivals of asylum seekers to Australia, commencing on 18 September 2013.
Many high-profile and ordinary Australians called for the centre to be closed and the men brought to Australia or resettled elsewhere, over the seven years of its existence. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has cited the centre as an "indictment of a policy meant to avoid Australia's international obligations". It was formally closed on 31 October 2017; however hundreds of detainees ("transferees" according to the Australian government) refused to leave the centre and a stand-off ensued. On 23 November 2017, a few were resettled in the United States as part of a refugee swap deal.
Between August and November 2019, the last former detainees were moved to Port Moresby, with the government's regional processing contractors instructed to terminate services on 30 November 2019. High-profile detainee, the Iranian-Kurdish writer and activist Behrouz Boochani, went to New Zealand in November on a one-month visa to speak at WORD Christchurch event.
By November 2019 at least eight of the detainees had died by various means, including suicides, some on Manus and some after being transferred to Australia on medical grounds, since first being detained in the facility. As of June 2020, over 100 men from Manus and Nauru were being detained in an hotel in Brisbane, after being transferred to the mainland for medical treatment, confined to quarters under a lockdown during the COVID-19 pandemic. They were released into the community in February 2021.
In October 2021, the Australian Government cut off all support to the 124 remaining men on the island, leaving PNG to take over responsibility for them.

Climbing wall only review. Poor safety, they only did a minimal check of our belaying and did not watch nor correct others’ technique. Equipment was often old and the slings as part of the floor anchors in particular looked very fluffy, old and in need of replacement. The routes themselves are ok, not inspiring, but clearly don’t get reset very often (and holds cleaned) as the holds are very polished. They are the classic poor setting style of maintaining the same ‘grade’ by changing the hold size when the gradient changes, rather than technical challenge.

Comfy and clean – what more do you need from a cinema? It was pretty quiet for the movie I went to, with only 5 people in there, but that was okay.

Chairs were big and super comfy. The place was super clean.

Food and drink are pretty expensive, with a heck of amount of salt on the popcorn, so pack your own snacks.

Wow, went to watch Guardians of the Galaxy 3, Mission Impossible and Transformers Rise of the Beasts. What a place to watch these movies. The chairs were very comfortable and the food always a winner with me and the whānau. Well done, thoroughly enjoyed this place.

I love the 100′ VMAX cinema, it’s the only cinema I want to visit now because the seats and huge and so well spaced that absolutely nothing impedes your view of this massive screen. Best movie going experience. And they will deliver hot food to your seat during the film if you have yet to eat lunch!

We haven’t been to the cinema together for over ten years, the crossing cinema didn’t disappoint. The seats are very comfortable and far enough apart to not be bothered by your neighbour. We watched Oppenheimer and enjoyed to movie. The popcorn was lovely too. Maybe won’t take us so long to re visit

Was unable to use bathroom during movie as exit way leading into building was locked shut. When leaving shortly after the movie the only exit way lead far beyond what I was expecting when trying to get out. I was disappointed by this as I felt we missed some sort of communication which could have gotten us out a more easier way. Climbing gates and walking for 10mins isn’t fun so late at night.

I’ve attended this cinema a few times since I’ve moved here, I’ve found sometimes it to understaffed to check toliets let alone restock towels or spot clean, bins are often overflowing. Staff have said in the past its been busy. Signs on the counter stated so this visit. Im not convinced. Have NEVER been here with over twenty seats sold.

This time it’s dirty around the carpet. TV signs are turned off. Out ice cream to sell! or large drink cups. The medium drink cup came over half filled with ice.

Was referred to the Cafe menu. No thanks it’s very basic to order enough stock especially over this holiday period. Not good enough! I won’t be bringing my business back here.

I’ll miss the comfy seating and the fantastic movies and the food delivered to your seat. Will anything change here?

Great sound great experience. But could have closed the door to make it Abit darker.

Great ushering service. The shop could do with expansion considering the very limited intermission time. Otherwise if it wasn’t for the ushers help it would have been chaotic, definitely!

Great venue to watch the 10 Tenors, was a bit uncomfortably warm inside but if they turned the aircon down it would have caused a stir with the majority of seats occupied by elderly folk. Great acoustics, friendly usher and service staff. Parking on the main street difficult, most parking out the rear and walk through the alley.

Love it here watching my daughter perform and for events but also the architecture of this building is beautiful as you would expect for a theatre it ticks all the boxes for me I love it

This is a beautifully appointed theatre, and quite grand for a small city. The acoustics are pretty good, and a wide range of acts and performances is catered for. The ticketing people are helpful and ushers are respectful and supportive. Seating is fully tiered as should be expected. It pays to be mindful when parking before an event as there is no specific theatre parking; you will need to find your own parking within the central city, or organise other travel arrangements, so plan to be a little early.
