How to Donate to an Op Shop in Australia

Donating to an op shop (opportunity shop) in Australia is a great way to support local communities and reduce waste. Op shops accept a wide range of items, including clothing, accessories, household goods, books, and toys. Here are some easy steps you can follow to donate to an op shop:

    • Gather your donations: Start by collecting the items you wish to donate. Make sure they are clean, in good condition, and working properly.
    • Research op shops in your area: Look for op shops in your local area to donate your items. You can search online or ask friends and neighbors for recommendations.
    • Contact the op shop: Reach out to the op shop and inquire about their donation process. Some op shops may have specific requirements or restrictions on what they can accept.
    • Schedule a drop-off: Once you have confirmed that the op shop is accepting your donations, schedule a time to drop them off. Most op shops have specific drop-off hours or days.
    • Prepare your donations: Before dropping off your donations, sort and pack them accordingly. Clothing can be folded or placed in bags, while fragile items should be wrapped carefully.
    • Complete the drop-off: Take your donations to the op shop during the designated drop-off time. Some op shops may have a designated area or bin where you can leave your items.
    • Consider monetary donations: In addition to donating goods, you can also make monetary donations to op shops. These funds are used to support various community programs and initiatives.

Used to be my favourite op shop but find its too business orientated with the price. I think they have lost a bit of compassion in their service. If things become too expensive its better to just buy it new at K mart etc. Once pointed out broken tapes and they said to put it back. Find that many of the op shops have lost that caring vibe. bedding very expensive. Again better to just buy it privately.

Extremely poor management Ive ever seen .I put a hold on some electric recliners at this store. I left my details with the manager To give me a call with the price as they still had to be tagged and tested by the electrian He told me it may take a while for them to be tagged and tested as the electrian didnt come in very often . I WAS NOT ASKED TO LEAVE A DEPOSIT..After a couple of wks I decided to call I looked for a phone number on the website and called no answer.During a period of 3 weeks I called a few times but nobody answered the phone at all so at the last phone call I left a voice message but nobody called me back still. I also didn’t have a missed call from him either so it’s not as if missed a call and didn’t call back .I don’t live in Coffs Harbour so I had to wait until I had an appointment again in Coffs Harbour to go to the store face to face again .I went into the store and spoke to the manager about the Chairs and he Told me that one of his staff had sold them. I was very disappointed and devastated and finaly upset as I left the store shattered that he would not do ANYTHING to fix the problem. I figured I would be able to have the option to purchase them as I had left my details before they were sold to the other people. He informed me that his staff had double sold them and that they had double sold other things before. I practically begged with him to sort it out but he wouldn’t only an apology that’s it I will never ever go in that store ever again! SO Wrong no compassion .

Horrible place. Just took my grandmother there to have a look, and was asked if I have a mask (she did). I politely replied that I had an exemption, and the manager came out and told me to leave. I let him know again that I had an exemption and he proceeded to come within inches of me trying to intimidate me and said “I don’t care, get out” – I tried to inform him that if he refuses service to me as I have an exemption, it is in breach of the Commonwealth Discrimination Act 1993 (sections 6 &24) again was met with “I don’t care”.. Absolutely disgusting management to be so PRO discrimination.

Not happy with the service, their policies or the way the place is run at the Toormina store. Some staff members were lovely and others not so nice at all. I personally, will never enter the store again, let alone spend any money there. “Bees love honey not vinagar”

The pricing man was super rude! He put an $80 price tag on a throw rug that wouldn’t cost that much new. The dress my daughter bought cost $15 and once home she discovered it had been cut roughly to shorten. Op shops should be there to support folk not rip them off. It was super demoralising after losing so much to flooding to then be overcharged and treated rudely.

Lady was being nice to my mum and when she turned her back then loudly said “watch out for that one” to her coworker (she basically yelled it) when she had no reason to suspect her doing wrong. Made my mum pretty upset when I told her and now she refuses to go. (that’s the only store she can afford) she needed a pot and pan for cooking and now she has to have microwaved food, in a roach infested house.

This vinnies is totttaàaaaaaallllllyyyyy groovy. Everytime I go in there it is inspirational . Being a bit of an artist I look for items to either upscale or pull apart for the fabric to use on my artworks. Good clothing in very good condition. Furniture, kitchen gear aaaannndd some crafting stuff. Always looking for crafting stuff. Excellent pricing too. The staff are awesome. There were two ladies today that gave me a good chuckle. There is also a place attached where you can get some help from but you need to make an appointment. Very wheelchair friendly. Only one disable park. However worth the look. Always fun in there.

There is nothing just or compassionate about this store.

Horrible “staff” who follow you around as if you are a thief. Same person also took it upon herself to tell my child off for touching the necklaces after I had just asked her not to touch.

The woman who served my dad and I that was working on the 1st of May at 2-3:00pm was extremely rude. My dad assumed that the socks that he was paying for was $6 dollars but it was $8.75 and the woman corrected him, but not in a nice way. “Maybe if you opened your eyes and looked at the price you would see that the price was 8.75” I was confused at why she thought that her saying that was a good idea because it wasn’t, especially since saying that to a customer.. like why was that needed? My dad chuckled awkwardly and then we both walked out. Considering it’s Good Sammy’s I would’ve THOUGHT that customer service would be better but it isn’t.

What to Consider When Visiting an Op Shop in Gladstone

Anglican This N That Shop in Gladstone
Anglican This N That Shop in Gladstone

When going to a thrift store in Australia, there are several things to consider in order to have a successful and enjoyable shopping experience. Here are some factors to keep in mind:

    • Location: Choose a thrift store that is conveniently located for you. Check online or use mapping apps to find the nearest options. This will save you time and make your visit more convenient.
    • Store Reputation: Research the store’s reputation before visiting. Look for reviews and feedback from previous customers to get an idea of the quality and variety of items available.
    • Store Policies: Familiarize yourself with the store’s policies such as returns, exchanges, and any membership or discount programs they offer. Knowing these details beforehand can help prevent any confusion or disappointment later on.
    • Opening Hours: Check the store’s opening and closing hours. Some thrift stores have limited operating hours or specific days when they receive new inventory. Planning your visit accordingly will ensure you have enough time to browse and find what you’re looking for.
    • Bring Cash: Many thrift stores in Australia prefer cash payments, so it’s a good idea to bring enough cash with you. Some stores may accept cards, but it’s always safer to have cash as a backup.
    • Inspect Items: Before making a purchase, thoroughly inspect the items you’re interested in. Check for any damages, stains, missing parts, or signs of wear and tear. This will help you make an informed decision and avoid any surprises after you’ve made the purchase.
    • Try Things On: If the thrift store has a fitting room, take advantage of it and try on clothing items you’re considering. This will help ensure a proper fit and prevent the hassle of returning items that don’t work for you.
    • Be Open-Minded: Thrift stores offer a wide range of items, so keep an open mind while shopping. You may discover unique pieces or unexpected treasures that you wouldn’t have found in regular retail stores.
    • Support a Cause: Many thrift stores in Australia are associated with charities or non-profit organizations. By shopping at these stores, you are not only getting great deals but also supporting a good cause. Consider the values and objectives of the thrift store and choose to shop where you align with their mission.

      Dear Salvation Army,

I am putting in a complaint about Jarvis (I think it was) the manager at salvation army in Gladstone.

I would like to express how I felt today going to my local salvation army, I was on the hunt for a 80s prom dress for a hen do I have coming up.

I approached a staff member and asked where the fitting rooms are for me to try something on and was told that there isn’t any. I asked why and was told it was due to theft of items which I understand. I then asked if I can return an item if it didn’t fit me as I am a new mother and I am breastfeeding so something that would fit me doesn’t at the moment. I was told to ask the manager which is when I met Jarvis the Manager of the salvation army in Gladstone. I asked Jarvis if I could please put the items over my clothes to see if they fit, he said no very rudely. I asked how am I meant to know if it fits me and you have no return policy? He then said “I don’t want to talk to you get out my face”. I was completely shocked and I said how can you talk to a customer like this I am just asking you a simple question. He then continued to be rude to me and said I don’t want to talk to you.

I asked for his name and told him I am putting in a complaint which he said “do it” and showed me his badge all cocky. I left the store crying I was trying to explain to him that I am breastfeeding and I need to try things on at the moment but he didn’t want to listen to a word I was saying. I have never felt so insulted and hurt.

How is a policy in place where you cant try items on or have a return policy for clothing?

I would like an outcome about this matter as I have never felt so upset about leaving a store.

      Thank you

Uncomfortable shopping experience – always followed and watched by staff. Stopped carrying a handbag with me but it still occurs. No longer a shop for those in need – ‘name brands’ priced to suit the trending buy second hand/ethical etc market. Occasionally find gems but really need to hunt through racks, but as mentioned above it’s no longer enjoyable when made to feel like a criminal

Very bad experience! No change room also not allowed to put clothes on to check fitting. I did try a top on in front of a mirror near the service counter and was reprimanded. I cannot afford to buy and not try for fitting.

Staff are nice but the prices are RIDICULOUS! I literally heard staff looking up the prices of items on eBay for which I assume is what they base their prices on for certain items. Op shops have become a JOKE! People DONATE these items FOR FREE and you guys scam everyday people because we choose to shop sustainably and because the cost of living is becoming exorbitant! You guys need a reality check.

95% of the items for sale here are extremely overpriced. A real shame honestly for those whom are struggling, as they would not be able to afford to shop in this store. Pretty disgusting knowing everything was donated to them for free, they are taking advantage of people who buy from them. I would encourage people to buy retail from kmart big w etc as those stores will sell you brand new items for much less.

How to Donate to an Op Shop in Australia

If you have items that you no longer need or want, donating them to an op shop (also known as an opportunity shop or thrift store) in Australia is a great way to give back to your community and support a good cause. Op shops are usually run by charities and rely on donations to fund their programs and services.

Here are some simple steps to donate to an op shop in Australia:

    • Sort through your items: Before donating, it’s important to go through your belongings and separate items that are in good condition and can be sold from those that are damaged or unsellable. Op shops prefer to receive clean, usable items that can be resold to generate income.
    • Find a nearby op shop: There are many op shops in Australia, often affiliated with well-known charities such as The Salvation Army, St. Vincent de Paul, and Red Cross. Use online directories or search engines to find the closest op shop to your location.
    • Check donation policy: Each op shop may have different donation policies, so it’s a good idea to check their website or contact them directly for guidelines on what they accept and any restrictions they may have.
    • Drop off your donation: Once you have sorted your items and selected the op shop you wish to donate to, simply take your donation directly to the op shop during their opening hours. Some op shops may also have donation bins or offer collection services, so be sure to check their website or call ahead if you need alternative options.
    • Get a receipt: If you would like a tax deduction for your donation, ask for a receipt from the op shop. Charitable donations are often tax-deductible in Australia, so be sure to keep the receipt for your records when filing your tax return.

Donating to an op shop not only helps those in need but also supports initiatives that promote recycling, sustainability, and reducing waste. By giving your unwanted items a second life, you are contributing to a greener and more compassionate society.

Saturdays apparently they stay open til 4 if there are lots of customers in store so go check it out even if you think it’s shut. The donation centre round the back shuts at midday though so if you have a big load to drop off do it first thing. I always did like this Vinnies, unfortunately they’ve also started to suffer from the uptake in prices as most Vinnies have in recent years. They still have weekly discounts on their rotating ticket colours though. I don’t come as often as I used to. But everyone who works there is lovely, and there’s so much to see. Great now they’ve extended the shop to the back. Lots of treasures to sift through. Just found a nice leather vest for $20, which is fine, but still felt like a luxury price for unwanted goods… Only walked out of there with that as I couldn’t also justify $25 for a pair of pants. almost $50 for just two items? :/ also saw $100 on a vtg wedding dress that said on the ticket ‘needs a dry clean’ lol! and $30 on a childrens sweater, even though it stated on the tag ‘damaged’. It’s just hit or miss. You can come out with maybe one or two good treasures within a reasonable budget.

If you are old enough to remember how op shops ‘used’ to be, you will love this place. It’s a hidden little gem. The pricing is very good. It’s as far away from those over priced, boutique op shops as you can get. I have visited a few times and always leave with some little treasure. It’s worth the little rummage through different parts of it. Staff were really lovely as well

Very rude, judgemental people, they actedike the donated free goods were coming out of there own pocket,if I had donated items to be given to people for free and they were treated so poorly I would be so upset, and the judgement and questions asked when we are in a cost of living crisis and if you need food assistance is so shameful, especially for people that should be doing gods work

Disappointed since this is a great shop and my first visit was great, lovely staff and lots of unique items.. However today one of the staff members was quite rude and condescending when I was simply trying to take a mirror(that I was purchasing) off a rack because the other ladies were busy. Rather than approaching me and asking me if I needed a hand, she stormed over to me and scolded me like a child ? which just makes me want to avoid this store all together.

How to Donate to an Op Shop in Australia

If you have items that you no longer need or want, donating them to an op shop (also known as a thrift store) in Australia is a great way to give back to your community and help those in need. Whether it’s clothing, furniture, electronics, or household items, there are a few simple steps you can follow to donate to an op shop:

    • Step 1: Choose a charity or op shop to donate to. There are numerous charities and op shops in Australia, so choose one that aligns with your values and supports causes you care about.
    • Step 2: Check the op shop’s donation guidelines. Different op shops have different rules and restrictions on what they accept. Make sure to check their website or contact them directly to find out what items they are currently accepting.
    • Step 3: Clean and sort your items. Before donating, take the time to clean and organize your items. This will make it easier for the op shop to process and sell them.
    • Step 4: Pack your items in bags or boxes. Place your items in bags or boxes that are easy to carry and transport.
    • Step 5: Take your donation to the op shop. Visit the op shop during their opening hours and drop off your donation. Some op shops may offer a curbside donation drop-off service, so check if this option is available.

By following these steps, you can easily donate your items to an op shop in Australia and make a positive impact in your community.

First time that I have been in the Salvos Store Traralgon but it will not be the last. The staff were so friendly and helpful which was fantastic. Plus the variety of stock was fabulous – and yes I came away with a bargain ‼️

Salvos have been in the process of upscaling their stores to make them less “trash and treasure” and more like a *proper* store. I kind of miss the old style, but I can appreciate what they’re doing here – the stock’s well curated, the shop is very well presented, they offer a bunch of new and interesting items (such as confectionery) and the staff are kind and helpful. I like going through their collection of media and books! And the location is pretty good, it’s located right next to the main road through town so it’s not hard to find.

Plenty of range, not as big as the Viinnies down the road but better stuff I reckon. There was heaps of well ordered clothes, kids clothes, toys, books and bric a brac. Not a huge amount of furniture but what furniture they did have was really cool. Got some smick stuff from here. Location really convenient just off the main road.

Absolute rip off. They’re more expensive for furniture than fantastic and Kmart. Crazy prices on everything, marked up and too expensive for an op shop.

Absolutely ridiculous pricing so expensive given they are all donated items and they want top dollar for stuff. They have anko top from kmart they want more for them that an kmart brand new it ridiculous.

A good little op shop that’s been here for decades. Has a good selection of knick-knacks and clothing, and isn’t overly curated like a lot of other thrift stores are starting to do. It’s also located in the town centre and close to parking, so you can pop in while out doing errands. One of the places I try to go regularly.

How to Donate to an Op Shop in Australia

If you have items that you no longer need or want, donating them to an op shop is a great way to give back to your community and help those in need. Op shops, short for “opportunity shops,” are typically run by charitable organizations and sell donated items to raise funds for various causes. If you’re interested in donating to an op shop in Australia, here’s how you can do it:

    • Find a local op shop: Look for op shops in your area by searching online or using directory websites. You can also ask friends, colleagues, or neighbors for recommendations.
    • Check the op shop’s donation policy: Each op shop may have different guidelines for accepting donations. Before donating, check if they accept the items you have and if there are any specific restrictions or requirements.
    • Prepare your items: Sort and pack your donations into boxes or bags. Clean and launder the items if necessary. It’s important to donate items that are in good condition and can be resold or used by someone else.
    • Visit the op shop or drop-off points: Some op shops have designated drop-off points where you can leave your donations. Alternatively, you can bring your items directly to the op shop during their operating hours.
    • Complete the donation process: When you arrive at the op shop, inform the staff that you have donations to make. They will guide you on where to leave the items or may assist you in unloading them if needed.
    • Consider getting a receipt: Op shops are usually registered charities, and they may provide receipts for the items you donate. These receipts can be used for tax purposes, so ask the staff if you’re eligible to receive one.

Used to be my all time favourite mission shop, but the attitude and service from some of the volunteers is appalling.. You can definitely tell they don’t care about their customers supporting the local city mission. Makes you feel like you’re an inconvenience when you get served. Very upsetting to say the least when I prefer to drive 15 minutes to Ulverstone City Mission instead of stopping in.
