What to Consider When Visiting an Op Shop in Hobart

    Bruce in Hobart
    Bruce in Hobart

When going to a thrift store in Australia, there are several things to consider in order to make the most out of your visit. Here are some important factors to keep in mind:

    • Location: Research and find thrift stores that are located near you or in areas you plan to visit. This will save you time and effort in traveling too far.
    • Opening hours: Check the opening hours of the thrift store you plan to visit. Some thrift stores have limited operating hours or may be closed on certain days of the week.
    • Donation days: If you have items to donate, find out the donation days of the thrift store. Some stores have specific days and times when they accept donations.
    • Size and variety: Consider the size and variety of items available in the thrift store. Larger stores often have a wider range of options to choose from.
    • Pricing: Thrift stores in Australia typically offer items at very affordable prices. However, some stores may have different pricing structures or discount options. Make sure to check the pricing policy before making a purchase.
    • Quality and condition: Inspect the items you are interested in buying to ensure they are in good quality and condition. While thrift stores generally have a range of items, some may have a higher standard of quality than others.
    • Sales and promotions: Keep an eye out for any sales or promotions that the thrift store may be running. This can help you get even better deals on your purchases.
    • Sustainability: Thrift shopping is a sustainable choice as it reduces waste and supports recycling. Consider the environmental impact of your purchases and make conscious choices.

By considering these factors and being prepared, you can have a successful and enjoyable thrift shopping experience in Australia.

      I’d give -0 if i could.

Aside from only assisting people that follow their religion (iv’e asked for help before and they refused me as i told them i’m not interested in joining any church when they asked me to sign some forms to join one for assistance. This was some years ago, hopefully this isn’t a thing as pretty sure charities can’t do that as a human rights issue and goes against what a charity is).

Today i walked into this store. The shelves and displays we’re absolutely crammed with stuff, a few people browsing in store. I looked at the first 2 glass cabinets at the front of the store, nothing seemed to be under $15. After browsing a little more of the cabinets i walked strait back out as i certainly can’t afford anything from here, these are upper-class prices and certainly not a place that someone in financial need can afford or even justify spending when they can get cheaper new elsewhere. No wonder their store is crammed like a hoarders house because their customers/general public can’t afford to buy anything.

$45 for a cup set they literally got donated for free (seen the same set cheaper on ebay). $25 for a book they got donated for free. $110 for a small table statue. $8 for an anko shirt they sell instore brand-new for $5 (this has been noticed a few times by different people i’ve spoken too and their friends). See any patterns? Isn’t a charity meant to offer secondhand items for affordable prices for the needy and low-income? Why are their prices more than that of a high end store selling new items? Why do they over-price used clothes from low-cost stores at above rrp? Aren’t there laws against that?

I’ve also heard from plenty of other’s that they’ve attempted to donate perfectly good item’s, but have been turned away because it’s either not good enough or maybe has a minor issue, but still easily fixable/functionable. This is a very entitled expectation to have of literally free donated item’s from people hoping to help another person. Why are charity worker’s turning people away? Are they only expecting people to donate only high profit item’s? This isn’t how a charity works.

Also Salvo’s ebay store seems to be booming really well, especially with all their high end market prices. Kinda wonder if their ebay, etc stores are in any way being regulated? Ebay really is a great profit tool isn’t it? They can sell all over the world! All seems very shady to me. Especially after the horrid things i’ve heard about this business (salvo’s).

This business/store/”charity” needs to be investigated and held accountable. They don’t even pay taxes on that profit. People donate to this business their possesions so that the needy can be helped, not feed the greedy. It’s just a massive insult to people’s good-will. They have clearly lost touch with what the meaning of charity even is and they’ve certainly lost their ethics.

At least some other (different charities) second-hand stores sell at reasonable costs. I’ve found that vinnies is the best for price and lifeline seems to be fairly priced as well, but some stores can be a hit and miss. City mission can be a hit and miss also, but are still usually pretty good and find their stores are slighly bigger. The stores are usually clean and tidy, but noticably more empty than salvo’s (hmm, i wonder why). I definitely recommend donating to these charities if you do, as they are fair and anytime i’ve donated to them they’ve happily accepted them and actually put the item’s out.

Most products are quite trashy and overpriced for the condition they’re in. If you want a similarly large range of products for more reasonable prices, I reccommend going to the Vinnies on Argyle Street if you can make the trip.

Why are op shops charging so much for second hand clothing.went today and overpriced and not always in good shape. Just because it has a Brand name shouldn’t make it more expensive .

I’ve had to change my review of 5 stars down to 2. The prices have recently gone up dramatically. On my last visit I saw damaged items of clothing ranging from $7 to $40. As well as undamaged items priced at least 50% more than they were a few weeks ago. They’ve become yet another op shop selling clothes and goods for what you would often pay new.

Good op shop to search for furniture and some other house items! Attention is good, staff helpful and friendly. I did have one bad experience here as I put a couch on hold but it wasn’t respecter and when I came back to get it, it was gone ? I couldn’t get upset anyways as I understand it must have been a misunderstanding. I recommend

A great place to go for secondhand furniture, beds, lounges etc in good condition. Vinnie’s have stores around the suburbs selling clothes, shoes, handbags, baby wear and children’s toys. So if you need something, anything, try Vinnie’s first as the money goes to charity.

Just visited this store today (wednesdays are concession discount days). I bought a couple of dresses and took them up to be met with the most inhospitible attitude when being served by one of their ‘staff’ named Vicki (according to the reciept which will be kept for any proof of incident required). I asked if i could grab one of the dresses that was being displayed on one of the manniquins. It was priced as 20$ they said that it was just display and they’ll be taking them off next week. Fair enough. Never stopped them selling things off manniquins before so i can only assume they just didnt want have to take the dress off.

I showed my concession card twice to the cashier that did look at them both times that just gave a me blank expression before charging me the full amount competely ignoring the the card.

I proceeded to ask the donation sorter for this staff members name where he then just walked off to tell her someones not happy with her.

This is absolutely horrific treatment and what feels like discrimination as those served just before didnt appear to get this attitude and treatment in the slightest.

I will be reporting this incident directly with vinnies.

Utterly shameful for staff of vinnies to do customers. You cant just pick and choose who you treat with respect or who doesnt deserve it. Its a disgusting mindset that people should never have to experience from anyone.

Best time to shop at Op Shops Australia

Op shops, or charity thrift stores, in Australia are a treasure trove of bargains just waiting to be discovered. But when is the best time to shop at these stores? Well, it depends on what you’re looking for. Here’s a breakdown of the best times to shop at Op shops in Australia:

    1. Spring Cleaning Time:

    • Spring is a popular time for people to declutter their homes and donate unwanted items.
    • This means that Op shops will be receiving a lot of new stock during this time.
    • You can find a wide variety of items, from clothing to furniture, at great prices.

    2. End of Season Sales:

    • Op shops often have sales to clear out items at the end of each season.
    • This is a great time to stock up on clothing for the upcoming season.
    • You can find designer labels and brand-name items for a fraction of the original price.

    3. Public Holidays:

    • Op shops in Australia often have sales and promotions during public holidays.
    • This is a great time to shop, as you can find even better deals on already discounted items.
    • Popular public holidays to look out for include Australia Day, Easter, and Christmas.

    4. Midweek Visits:

    • If you’re looking for a less crowded shopping experience, try visiting Op shops during the week.
    • Weekends tend to be busier, so you may have more luck finding hidden gems on a quieter day.
    • Staff may also have more time to assist you and answer any questions you may have.

When it comes to Op shopping in Australia, keep in mind that each store can have its own unique offerings. Some shops may specialize in clothing, while others may have a larger selection of furniture or home goods. It’s always a good idea to call ahead or visit the store’s website to see what they have in stock before making a trip.

Prices here are RIDICULOUSLY high! And they call this an Op shop? What happened to helping the poor? I can buy cheaper items at Myer than this place. I mean $30 for a used Kmart top. And for Dandenong.. Not worth going if you want to be paying more than you should be.

Good place to buy some general household items and clothes. Most of the merchandise are second hand features a small number of new items as well. Has a good selection of items and most prices are reasonable. Better to have an idea of the market value of an item just so you know you are getting a good deal.

It’s a great store and improved once the previous manageress got hired elsewhere. The only suggestion I would like to make is that the change rooms are way too small, dark and the reflection from the red doors does nothing to make clothes look appealing. Apart from that, it beats Rowville Salvos hands down.

How to Donate to an Op Shop in Australia

If you have gently used clothing, furniture, homewares, or other items that you no longer need or want, donating them to an op shop (opportunity shop) is a great way to give back to your community and support a worthy cause. Op shops in Australia are typically run by charitable organizations and rely on donations to fund their programs and services. Here are steps on how to donate to an op shop in Australia:

    • Research local op shops: Look up op shops in your area to find out which organizations operate them and what types of items they accept. You can do a quick online search or ask friends and family for recommendations.
    • Find out donation guidelines: Different op shops have different guidelines for the types of items they accept, so it’s important to familiarize yourself with their specific requirements. You can usually find this information on the organization’s website or by contacting them directly.
    • Gather your items: Sort through your belongings and gather the items you wish to donate. Make sure they are clean, in good condition, and meet the op shop’s guidelines. Some op shops may not accept certain items, such as large furniture or electronics, so it’s important to check beforehand.
    • Prepare your items: Wash and clean your clothing and homewares, and make sure all items are in working order. If you’re donating larger items like furniture, disassemble them if possible to make it easier for the op shop to handle.
    • Drop off your donations: Take your donations to the op shop during their hours of operation. They usually have designated drop-off points or bins where you can leave your items. Some op shops may also offer pick-up services for larger items, so check if this is available in your area.
    • Keep a record: If you require a receipt for tax purposes, make sure to ask for one when dropping off your donations. Many op shops provide receipts that you can use to claim a deduction on your tax return.

Older staff member with shortish hair was incredibly rude. No greeting, no smiling and didn’t say hello back, just stared judgingly. Wouldn’t allow us in with a coffee and demanded we put it down before we could come in. Could not have been more impolite about it. Shame because the opshop looked alright but the atmosphere just felt toxic quiet and uncomfortable. I’ve never been in an opshop that made me that uncomfortable. Shop attendant reminded of nurse Ratched from one flew over the cokoos nest.

This is an op shop that’s well worth going to, and the money goes to a great cause (re homing dogs and cats (and other small animals)). The staff are helpful and it’s in a location that’s not hard to get too (the centre of southport). This shop is defiantly worth a look, and spending money at!

Definitely the best op shop in Darwin .. but sadly , are now asking absurd prices for items that have been donated because people have used them and it’s an alternative to putting them in the bin .. For those who are struggling to clothe themselves and their families find that they can’t afford the things they need .. because someone has priced them far too high .. The title “op” is short for opportunity [ shop].. the theory being that you have the opportunity to buy affordable things .. that you can’t afford in other retail outlets .. Please consider the original and kinder concept.. and price things realistically !! Thank you …

I love op shops but I’m not sure what has happened to Nightcliff Salvos Stores. The current prices as absolutely ridiculous! Please remember the clients that are accessing this store. I would happily pay lower prices and do regular donations but I feel like the extreme prices are simply a money grab. Someone shouldn’t be paying match price for second hand items! This store is purely taking advantage of lower income earners and prioritising making money.

Look, volunteers are nice and I’ve been shopping at Salvos for years. I can purchase an old pair of shoes for $25, but whoever is putting these price tags on Salvos now needs to stop for a second, breathe and look at the socioeconomic status of the people who are really, the main beneficiaries – the people with less money… I was so disappointed that I had to write a “Karen” review. You are a second hand shop, remember that. People are going to be pushed into going to fast factory sweatshop Kmart because of these price tags. That’s all.

Tips for First-Time Op Shop Visitors in Australia

Op shops, or thrift stores, are a great place to find unique and affordable items in Australia. Whether you’re looking for clothing, furniture, or homeware, op shops have something for everyone. If you’re a first-time op shop visitor in Australia, here are some tips to make the most of your experience:

    • Research the best op shops in your area: Before heading out to explore op shops, it’s a good idea to do some research and find out which ones are known for having a good selection of items. You can look up reviews online or ask locals for recommendations.
    • Go during weekdays: Weekends are typically busier at op shops, so if you want to avoid the crowds, try visiting during weekdays. You’ll have a better chance of finding hidden treasures and getting some one-on-one assistance from the staff.
    • Have a flexible mindset: Op shops often have a wide variety of items, but they are all second-hand, so it’s important to have an open mind and be flexible with what you’re looking for. You might stumble upon something unexpected that you fall in love with.
    • Check for sales and discounts: Op shops often have regular sales and promotions, so be sure to ask the staff if there are any ongoing discounts. This can be a great way to save even more money on your purchases.
    • Inspect items thoroughly: Since op shop items are pre-owned, it’s a good idea to inspect them carefully before making a purchase. Check for any damages, stains, or missing parts. If you’re buying clothing, make sure to try them on to ensure they fit properly.
    • Bring a reusable bag: Op shops encourage sustainable shopping, so it’s a good idea to bring your own reusable bag for your purchases. Some op shops may charge for plastic bags or only offer paper bags.
    • Donate items: Op shops rely on donations to stock their stores, so if you have any unwanted items lying around, consider donating them. This way, you can declutter your home and help support a good cause at the same time.

Visiting op shops in Australia can be a fun and rewarding experience. Keep these tips in mind and enjoy exploring the treasure trove of unique items waiting to be discovered.

Be careful when buying from this store. Their prices for second hand goods are often WAY ABOVE retail (+25%) and they refuse to negotiate. I even offered $30 for an item which at JB HiFi is currently only $29 and they still wouldn’t budge. Do your homework and don’t be fooled into thinking second hand automatically means a good price.

Clean well organised with friendly staff. This is a big store with really decent prices. Not a rummage store for creative’s. Possibly one of the best for clothing if you have the time to sort through the stock or buy and sell clothes. Large range of shoes and accessories like handbags. High turnover and great pieces. Cheap furniture too.

Tuesday 8September: I think it is absolutely appauling a public store is allowed to operate without Toilet facilities being available to ‘paying Customers’ – dispite COVID our body funtions still need addressing. On previous visits both my friend & I have been permitted use of these facilities – both occassions we ask permission. Exercising caution is expected in todays world however, with only 3 customers in the store at the time, I’m pretty certain everyone was safe. I was told by the young man serving, the toilets needed to be sterilized after each use and not even the staff were supposed to use the toilet facilities – absurd!! To be told to go use the Service Station Toilets, which is across a busy road is irresponsible and uncaring towards ones fellow man.

Tips for First-Time Op Shop Visitors in Australia

Are you planning to visit an op shop (short for opportunity shop) in Australia for the first time? Op shops are thrift stores that sell second-hand items, and they are a great place to find unique and affordable treasures. To ensure you make the most of your visit, here are some tips for first-time op shop visitors:

    • Do your research: Before heading to an op shop, check their opening hours and location. You can also look online for reviews and recommendations to find the best op shops in your area.
    • Bring cash: Many op shops only accept cash, so it’s a good idea to have some on hand. Some larger op shops may accept card payments, but it’s always better to be prepared.
    • Dress comfortably: Op shops can be like treasure troves with lots of items to explore. Wear comfortable clothing and shoes so that you can move around freely and spend ample time browsing.
    • Check for discounts or sales: Op shops often have sales or discounts on certain days of the week. Look out for signs or ask the staff if there are any ongoing promotions that you can take advantage of.
    • Inspect items thoroughly: Since op shop items are second-hand, it’s important to inspect them carefully before making a purchase. Check for any damages, stains, or missing parts. Don’t be afraid to ask the staff for more information about an item if you’re unsure.
    • Have a shopping list: It can be easy to get overwhelmed by the variety of items in op shops. Consider making a shopping list beforehand to stay focused on what you need or are looking for.
    • Be patient: Op shops can sometimes be crowded, and it may take time to find the perfect item. Take your time, explore different sections, and be patient. You never know what hidden gems you might discover!
    • Support a cause: Many op shops are run by charitable organizations, and the proceeds from your purchases go towards supporting their cause. Feel good about your shopping by knowing that you’re contributing to a worthy organization.

With these tips in mind, get ready for an exciting and budget-friendly shopping adventure at an op shop in Australia!

How to Donate to an Op Shop in Australia

If you have items that you no longer need or want, donating them to an op shop (also known as a thrift store) in Australia is a great way to give back to your community and help those in need. Op shops rely on donations from individuals like you to stock their shelves and raise funds for various charitable causes. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to donate to an op shop in Australia.

    • Step 1: Choose a charity – There are many op shops in Australia run by different charities. Research and select a charity that aligns with your values and causes you want to support.
    • Step 2: Find a local op shop – Use the charity’s website or online directories to locate op shops in your local area.
    • Step 3: Check donation guidelines – Visit the op shop’s website or call them to check their donation guidelines. Some op shops may have specific criteria for the items they accept.
    • Step 4: Sort and clean your items – Before donating, make sure to sort through your items and only donate those that are in good condition and still usable. Clean the items if necessary.
    • Step 5: Drop off your donation – Take your donation to the op shop during their opening hours. Some op shops also offer donation collection services, so check if that option is available.
    • Step 6: Get a receipt – Ask for a donation receipt if you would like to claim a tax deduction for your donation. Keep the receipt for your records.

Donating to an op shop is a simple and meaningful way to contribute to your community and reduce waste. By following these steps, you can easily donate your unwanted items and support a good cause.

I really love this opshop, it’s a hidden gem and has such a large selection of goodies, good condition furniture and clothing, shoes, linen and kids stuff. Two staff today were so lovely and forgiving when my young son accidentally broke something. They checked to see if he was ok as the most important thing and that meant a lot to me. Elderly male volunteer/staff member working at the clothing drop off was incredibly rude and accused me of cutting someone off when I simply parked next to another (already parked!) car in the donations drop off area. How this translates to cutting someone off when there was clearly enough space for 2 cars I do not know. Absolutely ridiculous and a disgusting way to treat members of the public who are supporting your charity. I had 5 bags of mostly new clothing to donate, ended up taking them to another op shop where the volunteers were polite and reasonable.

Great staff. Clean store. SO VERY OVERPRICED oh my goodness particularly items like second hand toys close to retail price. Nick Nacks and mugs well overpriced. I was looking for an affordable way to decorate my home but I would be better off going to target such a shame

You’re supposed to be there to help those less fortunate yet can’t reduce something when requested. I was told that the price is firm as new stock…seriously donated items you paid nothing for and you only see the profit! I have shopped here and donated here many times in the past. Disgusting and will never shop here again.

Treasure Hunting 101: Common Items in Australia’s Op Shops

Op shops in Australia, also known as thrift stores or charity shops, offer a wide range of donated items, making them a treasure trove for bargain hunters and eco-conscious shoppers. As these shops rely on donations, the stock can vary greatly depending on what has been donated. However, there are some common products that you can often find at op shops in Australia.

Here is a list of common products you can find at op shops in Australia:

    • Clothing: Op shops are a great place to find pre-loved clothing for men, women, and children. You can often find designer pieces, vintage clothing, and unique items that are no longer available in retail stores.
    • Accessories: From handbags and wallets to scarves and belts, op shops often have a variety of accessories to complete your outfit.
    • Furniture: Op shops frequently have a selection of furniture, including chairs, tables, dressers, and bookshelves. These items are usually priced at a fraction of their original cost.
    • Home decor: You can find a range of home decor items at op shops, such as lamps, artwork, vases, and decorative objects. These pieces can add character to your home without breaking the bank.
    • Kitchenware: Op shops often have a selection of kitchenware, including plates, bowls, glassware, and cooking utensils. You can find vintage and retro pieces that add charm to your kitchen.
    • Books: Op shops are a paradise for book lovers. You can find a wide range of books, including novels, non-fiction, children’s books, and cookbooks.
    • Electronics: While not as common as other items, op shops occasionally have electronics such as DVD players, radios, and small kitchen appliances.
    • Toys and games: Op shops often have a selection of toys and games for children of all ages. From board games to stuffed animals, you can find affordable entertainment options.
