I think the worst part of staying here was not being able to breathe. The entire building feels like it’s been completely sealed. The air was so stale, stagnant, and musty after stepping off the elevator. I didn’t think it could be any worse and then I opened my room door. No windows to open, no AC, not even a fan in the room to help circulate the air. To make it worse, someone in the room was vaping. I can’t imagine what it must feel like on a hot and humid summer day.

Staff was friendly and tried to be as helpful as possible, but can’t accommodate everyone and everything which I understand. The kitchen was usually dirty from people not cleaning up after themselves. Good amount of fridge space though.

I guess, what do you expect from a hostel in the middle of Auckland?

I definitely would not recommend this accommodation!

We had a private double room. The bed was like sleeping on the floor it was so hard. There was only a bottom sheet and a doona. I’m not convinced the doona cover had been washed between guests (yuck) as it had that “needs to be washed” feel.

The bathroom for the floor had 2 toilets plus a shower and toilet cubicle. Only one toilet had a working light and none of them were clean.

As an adult I don’t appreciate being told that I can only consume water in my room. If I want to eat or have a beverage in my room it’s none of management’s business.

I’m glad we were only there for one night and I will never return.

The only positive about Choice was the CBD location.

We planned to stay at the Choice Backpackers hostel for 4 nights but when we checked in our room everywhere was mold and it also smelled like mold, it wasn’t cleaned, you can’t shower there because it was dirty. Also the bathrooms are very unhygienic and you don’t want to get ready in it. Because of this circumstances we checked out directly the next day. Even tho the hostel is located pretty good, it’s not a reason to stay in this unhygienic hostel!

The room was fine ig. No major issues other than the first room we checked into had broken ac and no window to open. They moved us rooms which was fine… come to find out the shower on the 5th floor is covered in black mold. If I didn’t need to shower I’d give this place a better review. It looks a little old maybe a little run down but not op bad. The shower is a literal health hazard to anyone that goes in there tho. Nvm a severe asthmatic like me. The staff seemed nice and the location is fairly good. There’s a couple of clothing stores around as well as a lot of places to eat out.

Paid for a single room – stank of mould and damp. Showers and communal areas are questionable and often felt dirty. The staff are nice and due to its size the hostel was good for socialising as there are so many people coming and going. Good location in the CBD to get places and use the buses.

Worst hostel experience in my life! Never again. First is $70 for room key, supposedly refundable. Then there’s no plates or kitchen utensils at all supposedly another 10$ supposedly refundable. Then ugly dinning area. Which fits 6 people. Then 2 tiny kitchens which always overclouded. Wifi sucks can’t even watch YouTube. This trash is massively overrated and overpriced.

I booked a single room, and it smells bad when I arrived. The staff said they cannot do anything because they are fully booked.
I opened the window and set the table fan to blow air out whole night to survive the smell. Then I was wake up at 4am by itchiness on my hand and saw some bites, not sure they are from mosquitoes from the open window or bed bugs

Recently stayed at the YMCA hotel and it was quite a disappointing experience. The room was visibly run down with a rusty fan, and the lack of heating made it extremely uncomfortable, affecting my sleep. Surprisingly, I wasn’t the only one; I encountered three other upset guests in the bathroom. Even the $8 breakfast was subpar – the coffee was overly bitter, and there were grains in the cup the food was dry and I got nauseous afterwards. Overall, for the price paid, the experience fell far short of expectations. Hoping for improvements for future guests.

Have stayed here on 3 different occasions all for 3 nights and with large group bookings due to coming from an organisation.

Every single stay I have had a bad experience in some sort of way. Though it is tolerable.

Cons:
– Staff/customer service. Staff are friendly depending who you get. But they are so unorganised no matter how many times they change managers. Due to being a large group booking we planned months and months in advance. Yet we arrive and rooms aren’t ready and I have to give them my own planning sheet because they can’t find who’s situated in what room.
– BUGS. Had people in my group complain that there were bugs everywhere in their room. Though i’ve seen complaints about bedbugs in some reviews luckily we did not find any but cockroaches yes! We were on the TOP floor and yet cockroaches got to the room. This shows that cleaning needs to turn into deep cleaning.
– DONT LOSE YOUR KEY. Due to a large group booking someone was bound to lose their key to one of the dorms. While yes that is our own fault. We were told a previous time we stayed that the lost key charge would cost $115 – which is understandable keeping in mind getting a new key cut + the electronic part to open the door. BUT this time round it became $250. Which is a large exaggeration on how much a replacement would actually cost.
– Breakfast also sucks. Grab and coffee + pastry across the road at Gusstops instead.

Pros:
– Bed is actually quite comfy
– Could fall asleep surprisingly easy even with city noise and nearby emergency services.
– Downstairs entertainment area (vending machine, pool table, ping pong, tv, etc.)
– Snack and drinks are affordable.
– Good location for being close to central like Queen St and Viaduct.

Notice how I put the cons first.
Overall, while the place has good amenities and are somewhat accomodating, I hope I won’t be back but sometimes life gets you and it might not be in the budget for our organisations next event for better accommodation.

If you are a traveller/backpacker it is BEARABLE for a couple of nights. Don’t stay any longer. There’s other places for even $10 more that are better.

Mold mold mold. The bathrooms I used had no vents so the constant showering has lead to mold on the ceilings. The dryer in the laundry room vented directly out the back in simply into the room. After our single load the room was as wet as a rainforest post rain in direct sun. Hot, wet, and sticky.

Also if you’re planning on doing any cooking just know you’ll be shoulder to shoulder. The five story hostel has two kitchens truly no larger than a camper van. On top of that, they loan on their dishes which means that guests don’t want to leave their plates or utensils to dry in a common area and rather bring the wet kitchen stuff into the dorm rooms.

The cleaning crew does an amazing job but the absolute basic nature of the hostels set up and kitchen regulations are just not plausible for any daily cleaning crew to tackle. Upgrades are necessary for this location. If you just need a night or maybe two and don’t want to cook while you’re here this can be your budget spot.
