What to Consider When Visiting an Op Shop in Warrnambool

When going to a thrift store in Australia, there are several things to consider to ensure a successful and enjoyable shopping experience. Whether you’re looking for unique vintage pieces, affordable clothing, or hidden gems, these considerations can help make your thrift store adventure a success.

First and foremost, it’s important to have an idea of what you’re looking for before entering the thrift store. Thrift stores can be overwhelming with the amount of items they carry, so having a general idea of what you need or want can help you navigate through the aisles more efficiently.

Another important consideration is to set a budget. While thrift stores often have affordable prices, it’s still easy to get carried away and overspend. Setting a budget beforehand can help you stay on track and prevent any impulse purchases.

In addition to setting a budget, it’s also important to consider the condition of the items you’re interested in purchasing. While some thrift stores have strict quality control measures, others may not. Take the time to carefully inspect items for any damages, stains, or signs of wear. This will help you avoid purchasing items that may not last long or require extensive repairs.

Lastly, don’t be afraid to haggle or negotiate prices. Thrift stores often have a bit of flexibility when it comes to pricing, especially if an item has been sitting on the shelves for a while. Polite and respectful negotiation can sometimes lead to a better deal.

Overall, going to a thrift store in Australia can be a fun and rewarding experience. By considering these factors, you can increase your chances of finding unique and affordable treasures. Happy thrifting!

Things to Consider When Going to a Thrift Store in Australia:

    • Have an idea of what you’re looking for before entering.
    • Set a budget to prevent overspending.
    • Inspect items for any damages or signs of wear.
    • Don’t be afraid to haggle or negotiate prices.

A pretty good sized store, well organised, friendly staff on the day I was there, and they don’t forget they’re selling pre-loved stuff (i.e. people’s old stuff) when they’re pricing. Or to put it more clearly, they don’t overprice. Picked up some great bargains.

Lovley shop with some reasonably priced items, biggest negative is the two larger guys I’ve met on occasions when making donations, they have a serious attitude problem and are put out if you donate items that then need to be sorted. I.e a bag with mixed items. No thanks just disgruntled huffing and puffing. They may be volunteering but manners cost nothing.

I shared my experience yesterday which I can not find now strange anyway St vinnies was selling the item the same as the normal shop price I pointed it out as it is suppose to be that bit more affordable for the people the man was rude so I call the manager Kim in the Cranbourne store the next day and told her what happened she just did not want to know what a joke this is not for the way they should treat people I will never donate or be in their store again

So here we go ! . I wasn’t sure where to post this but given it’s the same organization, it’s best here.

Your church, charity, business, run’s soup vans, I see one regularly at Narre Warren! . I assume it’s origin he’s something to do with your Cranbury op shop

One of your clients, recently seriously assaulted me , causing injuries which can’t be fixed I guess being a church you believe in the religious ideology of ” saving” all people even if evil

I will make it clear, thus assault wasn’t in the presence of your van membes , nor were they in the area, However , your church as another in Narre Warren, helps violent junkies, mental health patients , ex crims, etc . The person who assaulted me is regularly given free food by vinnies

Why are you helping the lowest of the low, of society? I have also posted a review about another local place who helps him . I will not accept, excuses like drug and alcohol use, mental health, a.d.h.d , he was bullied at school, mummy didn’t love him .

Plenty of people, have issues and aren’t violent , your van along with another organization shouldn’t be allowed to set up around a commercial shopping centre precinct, given some of the clientele you serve

I certainly won’t donate even $1 to , any church based charity ever

Isn’t it ironic? , How Centrelink pays junkies DSP , yet they can’t work

They’re fit enough though to attack a senior, I’m in that age range .. If vinnies aren’t happy with my review tough I don’t intend on removing it The attack your client committed, is on camera , but won’t be reported what hope do I have of justice, when Vinnie’s and transit church will just take a clients side

Vinnie’s appreciate the goods that I donate, they don’t throw out 90% of what you donate like Salvo,s do.. Sale prices are reasonable too if your a buyer.. I had quite a few bad experiences whilst trying to donate good new clothes at Salvo store in Cranbourne Nth, especially when I discovered most of my donations ended up in the dumpster…. just disgusted I was.. I was in Salvo store a few days ago, all you could hear is the staff in the back room smashing things that were kindly donated by genuine public being smashed in the bins..

This is another good Salvos I visited. I bought an oversized men’s shirt with huge front pockets for $10, which looks similar to current Louis Vuitton Resort 2023 collection. Totally a good find! Staffs are very lovely too.

I absolutely love this op shop, I always walk out with a bargain and they have a large variety of items. The staff went above and beyond for me one time, allowing me to purchase a beautiful shelving unit that they were using (which I replaced with something that wasn’t as nice) Reading the older reviews, I think people confuse this Salvation Army op shop with the large Salvo’s op shop on Sth Gippsland Hwy.

Best time to shop at Op Shops Australia

The best time to shop at Op Shops in Australia can vary depending on the season and location. However, there are a few general times that tend to be great for finding unique and affordable treasures.

    1. Spring Cleaning Season: As the weather starts to warm up, many people take the opportunity to declutter and donate their unwanted items. This can lead to a higher volume of donations and new stock being put out on the shop floor. Spring is a great time to find clothing, home decor, and accessories.

    2. End of Season Sales: Just like regular retail stores, Op Shops also have end-of-season sales where they offer deep discounts on items from the previous season. This is a great time to stock up on winter coats, boots, and accessories or get a head start on your summer wardrobe.

    3. Holiday Season: Op Shops are often flooded with donations during the holiday season. Many people receive new gifts and often donate their older items. This can be a great time to find high-quality toys, electronics, and kitchen appliances at a fraction of the original cost.

    4. Back to School: Towards the end of summer and the beginning of the school year, many Op Shops receive a surge of donations as parents clean out their children’s closets and buy new school supplies. This is an ideal time to find gently used school uniforms, backpacks, and stationary.

It’s important to note that while these times can generally be great for Op Shop finds, it’s also a good practice to visit your local Op Shop regularly as new items are being donated daily. Additionally, different Op Shops may have different markdown schedules or specific sale days, so it’s worth checking with your local store to see if they have any special promotions or discounts. So, whether you’re looking for a new outfit, home decor, or vintage treasures, keep these tips in mind for the best shopping experience at Op Shops in Australia.

What to Consider When Visiting an Op Shop in Kalgoorlie

Australian Red Cross Shop Kalgoorlie in Kalgoorlie
Australian Red Cross Shop Kalgoorlie in Kalgoorlie

There are several things to consider when going to a thrift store in Australia. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

    • Location: Choose a thrift store that is conveniently located for you. Consider the distance and accessibility, as well as the reputation of the thrift store in that area.
    • Opening Hours: Check the store’s opening and closing times to make sure you can visit during their operating hours. Some thrift stores may have specific days or times when they restock items, so it can be beneficial to know their schedule.
    • Types of Items: Different thrift stores may specialize in different types of items. Some may focus more on clothing, while others may have a wide variety of household items, furniture, and electronics. Research the store beforehand to see if they have what you are looking for.
    • Pricing: Thrift stores usually offer items at significantly reduced prices compared to retail stores. However, it’s still important to be mindful of the pricing. Check for any discounts or promotions, and compare prices with other thrift stores if possible.
    • Condition of Items: Since thrift stores sell used items, it’s essential to inspect the condition of the items before purchasing. Look for any signs of wear and tear, damage, or stains. Make sure the item is in usable condition or can be easily repaired if needed.
    • Return Policy: Check the thrift store’s return policy before making a purchase. Some stores may not accept returns or offer exchanges, so it’s crucial to be aware of their policies to avoid any disappointments.
    • Donations: If you have items that you no longer need, consider donating them to the thrift store. Many thrift stores rely on donations to support their operations and charitable causes, so your contribution can make a difference.

By considering these factors, you can have a successful and enjoyable thrift store shopping experience in Australia.

How to Donate to an Op Shop in Australia

If you have items that you no longer need or want, donating them to an op shop (opportunity shop) in Australia is a great way to support a local charity, help the environment, and give someone else the chance to find a bargain. Op shops accept a wide range of items, including clothing, accessories, furniture, household items, and toys. Here are some steps to follow when donating to an op shop in Australia:

    1. Choose a charity: There are many charitable organizations that operate op shops in Australia, such as the Salvation Army, St. Vincent de Paul Society, and Red Cross. Decide which charity you would like to support.

    2. Research donation guidelines: Check the charity’s website or contact them directly to find out what items they accept. Op shops generally prefer clean, good-quality items that are in working condition.

    3. Sort and pack your items: Separate your items into different categories, such as clothing, accessories, household items, and toys. Place them in bags or boxes that are easy to transport.

    4. Find a local op shop: Use the charity’s website or a search engine to locate the nearest op shop to you. Some charities have multiple op shop locations, so choose the one that is most convenient for you.

    5. Drop off your donation: Take your sorted and packed items to the chosen op shop during their opening hours. If you have a large or heavy donation, you may want to call ahead to make sure they can accommodate it.

    6. Obtain a receipt: Ask for a receipt when you drop off your donation. This will allow you to claim a tax deduction if the charity is registered as a deductible gift recipient (DGR).

    7. Consider additional support: If you are unable to drop off your donation, some charities offer pick-up services for larger items. You can also consider volunteering your time or making a monetary donation to further support the op shop and the charity’s cause.

Donating to an op shop in Australia is a simple and effective way to give back to your community. It not only helps those in need but also reduces waste by giving preloved items a second life. By following the steps above, you can easily donate to an op shop and make a positive impact.

A tight turn into the car park when you have busy traffic following. There’s a car parking space very close to the entry making it very hard to locate and then quickly turn in if you haven’t been before. Once in ,to leave a donation you drive in past sales area through active forklift operational area. Once parked there are marked bins to leave your donation and then leave back onto main road with again, car parked on main road close to exit blocking clear view for entry to live traffic. Very happy to leave donation for good cause but entry/exit a bit iffy.

Treasure Hunting 101: Common Items in Australia’s Op Shops

The Food Co-op Shop in Canberra
The Food Co-op Shop in Canberra

Op shops in Australia, also known as second-hand or thrift stores, are known for offering a wide range of products at affordable prices. These shops rely on donations from the community, which means you can find a variety of items, from clothing and accessories to household items and furniture. Here are some common products you can find at op shops in Australia:

    • Clothing: Op shops are a great place to find second-hand clothing for all ages and styles. You can often find vintage pieces, designer labels, and unique items that you wouldn’t find in regular retail stores.
    • Accessories: Op shops also offer a range of accessories such as bags, belts, hats, scarves, and jewelry. These items can help complete your outfit or add a touch of individuality to your style.
    • Household items: Op shops often have a selection of household items, including kitchenware, tableware, small appliances, and home decor. These items are a budget-friendly way to update your home or find unique pieces with character.
    • Furniture: Many op shops have a furniture section where you can find second-hand sofas, tables, chairs, and other pieces to furnish your home. These items are often priced lower than new furniture and can add a vintage or eclectic vibe to your space.
    • Books: Op shops are a treasure trove for book lovers. You can find a wide range of genres, from fiction and non-fiction to cookbooks and children’s books. Purchasing second-hand books not only saves money but also contributes to sustainability by giving books a second life.
    • Toys and games: Op shops often have a selection of toys, games, and puzzles for children and adults. You can find vintage toys, board games, and even outdoor equipment for a fraction of the price compared to buying new.
    • Electronics: While not as common as other items, some op shops may have a small selection of electronics such as TVs, stereo systems, and small appliances. It’s always worth checking out the electronics section for hidden gems at discounted prices.

Some really cool things here, vintage toys, nice artworks, loads of tea sets, beautiful books.

Customer service is quite poor however. Two girls were on the shift today, right after I walked in one girl asked the other a question to which the second girl (she has very short, strawberry-blonde hair) answered very loudly giving very intimate details of her life and relationship with her mother. It was so embarrassing to listen too, and there was no escape! She was so loud I could hear her just as clearly on the other side of the shop.

Once I picked what I wanted to buy I returned to the counter. She walked in front of me, blocking my path but not acknowledging me like a normal person would in a small space, especially if they were working in said small space, not even eye contact. Once I finally got to the counter both girls were there, I tried to establish eye contact with strawberry-blonde girl because she was standing right in front of me but she ignored me again and had a very sullen look on her face. I actually wasn’t even sure if she worked there by that point because she was so rude, but another customer asked her a question so that confirmed she did. Very unwelcoming. The second was very helpful, smiled, acknowledged me, wrapped the item and said goodbye.

It was a very bizarre and uncomfortable experience. I was thinking of bringing my husband back there but I don’t think I will, it was just so awkward and I really don’t want to repeat it.

Have loved this place for ++years

Wonderful stock – maybe it’s the best shop in canberra

Prices are even pretty good : their bargain baskets out at the front contain loads of interesting miscellanea, & even generally, their weird & wonderful treasures are charged +/- on par with regular op-shops’ ‘scale of fees.’

Always organised, lots of new stock every time (I go at least once a month), easy parking, helpful staff. Only problem is the toilets aren’t open anymore and there aren’t any close by so my advice is to go before you shop!

I used to love coming to this store and was willing to travel from Tuggeranong regularly but since new management a while back took over, prices are through the roof. Store used to have weekly specials that you would be able to get bulk clothing at a reasonable prices and for a large family that’s exactly what we needed to do regularly for our growing family. Prices are so high now that a pair of Kmart shoes/clothing/items are priced only a few dollars under buying them new from store and honestly if I was paying that much I would buy new instead. Unfortunately it is not worth my time to visit the store anymore unless we are in the area and even then I leave with maybe 1 or 2 items instead of buying more like we used to.Second hand stuff at average quality, the pricing is far from reasonable. Spending $40-60 on coats or jackets in winter from second hand goods is completely pointless when I can spend the same buying new and have the item in better condition and at times quality. I think this price increase and the change of structure to the sales processes was a huge mistake, families who used to rely on this store in hard times now will feel more pressure than ever before.

How to Donate to an Op Shop in Australia

Donating to an op shop (opportunity shop) in Australia is a great way to support local communities and reduce waste. Op shops accept a wide range of items, including clothing, accessories, household goods, books, and toys. Here are some easy steps you can follow to donate to an op shop:

    • Gather your donations: Start by collecting the items you wish to donate. Make sure they are clean, in good condition, and working properly.
    • Research op shops in your area: Look for op shops in your local area to donate your items. You can search online or ask friends and neighbors for recommendations.
    • Contact the op shop: Reach out to the op shop and inquire about their donation process. Some op shops may have specific requirements or restrictions on what they can accept.
    • Schedule a drop-off: Once you have confirmed that the op shop is accepting your donations, schedule a time to drop them off. Most op shops have specific drop-off hours or days.
    • Prepare your donations: Before dropping off your donations, sort and pack them accordingly. Clothing can be folded or placed in bags, while fragile items should be wrapped carefully.
    • Complete the drop-off: Take your donations to the op shop during the designated drop-off time. Some op shops may have a designated area or bin where you can leave your items.
    • Consider monetary donations: In addition to donating goods, you can also make monetary donations to op shops. These funds are used to support various community programs and initiatives.

Used to be my favourite op shop but find its too business orientated with the price. I think they have lost a bit of compassion in their service. If things become too expensive its better to just buy it new at K mart etc. Once pointed out broken tapes and they said to put it back. Find that many of the op shops have lost that caring vibe. bedding very expensive. Again better to just buy it privately.

Extremely poor management Ive ever seen .I put a hold on some electric recliners at this store. I left my details with the manager To give me a call with the price as they still had to be tagged and tested by the electrian He told me it may take a while for them to be tagged and tested as the electrian didnt come in very often . I WAS NOT ASKED TO LEAVE A DEPOSIT..After a couple of wks I decided to call I looked for a phone number on the website and called no answer.During a period of 3 weeks I called a few times but nobody answered the phone at all so at the last phone call I left a voice message but nobody called me back still. I also didn’t have a missed call from him either so it’s not as if missed a call and didn’t call back .I don’t live in Coffs Harbour so I had to wait until I had an appointment again in Coffs Harbour to go to the store face to face again .I went into the store and spoke to the manager about the Chairs and he Told me that one of his staff had sold them. I was very disappointed and devastated and finaly upset as I left the store shattered that he would not do ANYTHING to fix the problem. I figured I would be able to have the option to purchase them as I had left my details before they were sold to the other people. He informed me that his staff had double sold them and that they had double sold other things before. I practically begged with him to sort it out but he wouldn’t only an apology that’s it I will never ever go in that store ever again! SO Wrong no compassion .

Horrible place. Just took my grandmother there to have a look, and was asked if I have a mask (she did). I politely replied that I had an exemption, and the manager came out and told me to leave. I let him know again that I had an exemption and he proceeded to come within inches of me trying to intimidate me and said “I don’t care, get out” – I tried to inform him that if he refuses service to me as I have an exemption, it is in breach of the Commonwealth Discrimination Act 1993 (sections 6 &24) again was met with “I don’t care”.. Absolutely disgusting management to be so PRO discrimination.

The pricing man was super rude! He put an $80 price tag on a throw rug that wouldn’t cost that much new. The dress my daughter bought cost $15 and once home she discovered it had been cut roughly to shorten. Op shops should be there to support folk not rip them off. It was super demoralising after losing so much to flooding to then be overcharged and treated rudely.

Here are some common products you can find at op shops in Australia:

    • Clothing: Op shops are known for their wide selection of clothing items, including shirts, dresses, pants, and jackets. Whether you’re looking for everyday basics or unique vintage pieces, you’re likely to find something that suits your style at an op shop.

Lady was being nice to my mum and when she turned her back then loudly said “watch out for that one” to her coworker (she basically yelled it) when she had no reason to suspect her doing wrong. Made my mum pretty upset when I told her and now she refuses to go. (that’s the only store she can afford) she needed a pot and pan for cooking and now she has to have microwaved food, in a roach infested house.

This vinnies is totttaàaaaaaallllllyyyyy groovy. Everytime I go in there it is inspirational . Being a bit of an artist I look for items to either upscale or pull apart for the fabric to use on my artworks. Good clothing in very good condition. Furniture, kitchen gear aaaannndd some crafting stuff. Always looking for crafting stuff. Excellent pricing too. The staff are awesome. There were two ladies today that gave me a good chuckle. There is also a place attached where you can get some help from but you need to make an appointment. Very wheelchair friendly. Only one disable park. However worth the look. Always fun in there.

There is nothing just or compassionate about this store.

Horrible “staff” who follow you around as if you are a thief. Same person also took it upon herself to tell my child off for touching the necklaces after I had just asked her not to touch.

The woman who served my dad and I that was working on the 1st of May at 2-3:00pm was extremely rude. My dad assumed that the socks that he was paying for was $6 dollars but it was $8.75 and the woman corrected him, but not in a nice way. “Maybe if you opened your eyes and looked at the price you would see that the price was 8.75” I was confused at why she thought that her saying that was a good idea because it wasn’t, especially since saying that to a customer.. like why was that needed? My dad chuckled awkwardly and then we both walked out. Considering it’s Good Sammy’s I would’ve THOUGHT that customer service would be better but it isn’t.
