State housing is a system of public housing in New Zealand, offering low-cost rental housing to residents on low to moderate incomes. Some 69,000 state houses are managed by Kāinga Ora – Homes and Communities, most of which are owned by the Crown. In excess of 31,000 former state houses exist, which are now privately owned after large-scale sell-offs during recent decades. Since 2014, state housing has been part of a wider social housing system, which also includes privately owned low-cost housing.
An archetypal 1930s and 1940s state house is a detached two- or three-bedroom cottage-style house, with weatherboard or brick veneer cladding, a steep hipped tile roof, and multi-paned timber casement windows. Thousands of these houses were built across New Zealand as state housing, and as private housing after World War II, when the government started selling their drawings and plans in an attempt to hasten housing construction. These houses, also known as "ex-state houses" to distinguish them from modern state housing, have a reputation of being well-built and are very sought after by real estate buyers, especially after the leaky homes crisis of the 1990s and 2000s hit buyer confidence in newer stock.

the washing machine and dryers never get cleaned so it’s dirty every time i’ve been. the vending machine was out of order and didn’t have a sign up and i put money in it and i raised concerns with the owner next door in the two dollar shop and he said it has nothing to do with him and he refused to put up an out of order sign to stop other people from loosing their money. don’t use the vending machine there unless you want to loose money. also probably the most expensive laundromat.

Basic room, good mattress, bathroom was simple but new ish and felt clean. They are doing work on the place and all the improvements are nice. Kitchen was nice and new ish. Everything felt clean except for the plugs and carpet that ether need a industrial clean or to be replaced. But nothing was so awful that it was uncomfortable. Wish they would buy a charging tower for the room. Lovely quiet, calm atmosphere to the place. I would go back if I was heading through Hamilton.

Rooms were spacious, clean, with an ac unit, no windows to open so could get quite warm in the summer. Communal cooking facilities and living area again pretty clean. I did think the price for the hostel was quite expensive.

Didn’t even stay 5 minutes. Room was not as advertised. Smelt and everywhere generally unclean looking / feeling and smelly. Dingy creepy, not at all acceptable. They’d even turned the reception into what looks like a living space for the manager?? Do not recommend.

One of the most pleasant backpackers I’ve stayed in NZ for the past 1 year. Mr AJ, Ragul, and the team are very welcoming, friendly and helpful! The room and common areas are kept clean and tidy.

This place is less than 10mins walk to Transport centre, less than 5mins walk to Pak n Save, and plenty of eateries just across the road.

I’ve stayed in many hostels and this by far was the worst. Not even worth the price we paid in our opinion. the hostel almost seems like it has two different area. Downstairs rooms had a secure entrance after being in the entrance and it was bright and pretty decent from what we could tell. Unfortunately we were placed upstairs. The hallways were narrow, dirty, very smelly and pretty dark too. Kind of creepy actually. Our room looked nothing like the add (which ok I know it wouldn’t be the same but like it was WAY off). It was so dirty. There was broken and nasty furniture in there. It smelled. The window was covered in like dirt or mole. The AC made a terrible noise, and I took one look at those remotes for the tv and ac And NASTY. There were also missing baseboards all around the room which made us wonder if the place had a nasty bed bug problem at some point.

The bathrooms had no TP. One stall was locked because it was broken but it continued to just leak water all over the place. Showers were icky too…

We looked for hours for a different place to stay with no luck. We inquired about moving to a rom downstairs and the guy at reception was pretty rude and just gave us a “no”.

I’ll give location a bonus because it wasn’t far from the bus station and stuff but overall would not recommend this place to anyone.

Hamilton (Māori: Kirikiriroa) is an inland city in the North Island of New Zealand. Located on the banks of the Waikato River, it is the seat and most populous city of the Waikato region. With a territorial population of 185,300, it is the country's fourth most-populous city. Encompassing a land area of about 110 km2 (42 sq mi), Hamilton is part of the wider Hamilton Urban Area, which also encompasses the nearby towns of Ngāruawāhia, Te Awamutu and Cambridge. In 2020, Hamilton was awarded the title of most beautiful large city in New Zealand. The area now covered by the city was originally the site of several Māori villages, including Kirikiriroa, from which the city takes its Māori name. By the time English settlers arrived, most of these villages, which sat beside the Waikato River, were abandoned as a result of the Invasion of Waikato and land confiscation (Raupatu) by the Crown.
Initially an agricultural service centre, Hamilton now has a diverse economy and is the third fastest growing urban area in New Zealand, behind Pukekohe and Auckland. Hamilton Gardens is the region's most popular tourist attraction. Education and research and development play an important part in Hamilton's economy, as the city is home to approximately 40,000 tertiary students and 1,000 PhD-qualified scientists.

An iconic statue, installed in its temporary home at Waikato Museum while the new Waikato Regional Theatre is built.

The statue commemorates the development of the idea and the writing of The Rocky Horror Picture Show by Richard O’Brien, who lived in Hamilton and worked next door to the site of the now demolished Embassy Theatre.

Fantastic to see this area of Hamilton themed to The Rocky Horror Picture Show in honour of its creator, Richard O’Brien. He is said to have been inspired by the years he spent watching the Late Night Double Feature Picture Show at The Embassy Theatre (which previously stood on the site) and “cutting hair and daydreaming” in the barber shop out the front, precisely where the statue now stands.

If my review and photos were helpful for you, please give me a thumbs up ?? Thanks!

The 54-hectare park is based on the banks of the Waikato River and includes enclosed gardens, open lawns, a lake, a nursery, a convention centre and the Hamilton East Cemetery. It is the Waikato region's most popular visitor attraction, attracting more than 1 million people and hosting more than 2,000 events a year.Hamilton Gardens is described in popular culture as a botanical garden, but does not technically qualify as a botanical garden. The first substantial development, the Rogers Rose Garden, was opened in 1971 in an attempt to block highway development over the site. Since 1982 many newly developed areas have been opened to the public. Additional features of the gardens now include a lake walkway and a waterfall lookout.

Great little park. Takes about 1-1.5hours. Plenty of seating and table and chairs scattered around the walk including little covered over shelters. Chicken and ducks are common sight with a few cows. Some lovely grassy areas near the start very suitable for a picnic. A few maps around the place to help are it can get a bit disorientating. One suggestion would be slightly more signage to inform people about varied areas and trees.

Nice spacious zoo. Give yourselves at least 3 hours for a good sight-seeing walk. We were fortunate the weather is good, so we ended up seeing almost all animals, some sheltering under a shade.

I just wished they made the fences better. Most of the poles and fences are blocking the view, but we like how you can be really close to some animals, so I guess that’s alright.

Zoo is clean, you can see the staff are passionate about what they are doing.

Overall, we enjoyed our visit and definitely recommend visiting.

We (couple) enjoyed our trip to the Zoo and stayed a good four hours looking around and reading all the info. (It’s not just for kids, Adults need to keep learning too!) It’s great you can bring your own food and have a picnic. We also loved having the ice cream truck halfway through our wonder, prices and portion size was value for money (Boxing Day was hot). All facilities are clean and every path, garden and enclosure if well maintained and cared for (thanks to the staff) Note: There are quite a few steep paths to walk however there are quite a few seats along the way for those who will need to have a little break. Great day!

I worked as a Zoo Keeper at Hamilton Zoo back in 2000, but haven’t been back for over a decade.

The Zoo was always a lovely visit in terms of the animals and their enclosures. It has only improved over time with an impressive entrance + cafe, the upgraded play space for kids, and some wonderful landscaping.

Love this place we went on a Wednesday not many people so we can see every Animal at our own pace, environment are awesome very well maintained and also love staff, we have a zoo keeper walk passed us at the rhino place and he stop and explain a lot to us. At the end of the trip we get to the main playground my 3 years old have so much fun in the playground that she don’t want to leave.

      Will go visit again soon.

A great zoo with such friendly keepers. Talks are available and face to face encounters. Enclosures are big enough that it feels like the animals are free to act natural. Recommend allowing 2-3 hours to see it all. More if you want rest and lunch at the cafe.

New Zealand (Māori: Aotearoa [aɔˈtɛaɾɔa]) is an island country in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. It consists of two main landmasses—the North Island (Te Ika-a-Māui) and the South Island (Te Waipounamu)—and over 700 smaller islands. It is the sixth-largest island country by area and lies east of Australia across the Tasman Sea and south of the islands of New Caledonia, Fiji, and Tonga. The country's varied topography and sharp mountain peaks, including the Southern Alps, owe much to tectonic uplift and volcanic eruptions. New Zealand's capital city is Wellington, and its most populous city is Auckland.
The islands of New Zealand were the last large habitable land to be settled by humans. Between about 1280 and 1350, Polynesians began to settle in the islands and then developed a distinctive Māori culture. In 1642, the Dutch explorer Abel Tasman became the first European to sight and record New Zealand. In 1840, representatives of the United Kingdom and Māori chiefs signed the Treaty of Waitangi, which in its English version declared British sovereignty over the islands. In 1841, New Zealand became a colony within the British Empire. Subsequently, a series of conflicts between the colonial government and Māori tribes resulted in the alienation and confiscation of large amounts of Māori land. New Zealand became a dominion in 1907; it gained full statutory independence in 1947, retaining the monarch as head of state. Today, the majority of New Zealand's population of 5.25 million is of European descent; the indigenous Māori are the largest minority, followed by Asians and Pacific Islanders. Reflecting this, New Zealand's culture is mainly derived from Māori and early British settlers, with recent broadening of culture arising from increased immigration. The official languages are English, Māori, and New Zealand Sign Language, with the local dialect of English being dominant.
A developed country, it was the first to introduce a minimum wage, and the first to give women the right to vote. It ranks very highly in international measures of quality of life, human rights, and it has low levels of perceived corruption. It retains visible levels of inequality, having structural disparities between its Māori and European populations. New Zealand underwent major economic changes during the 1980s, which transformed it from a protectionist to a liberalised free-trade economy. The service sector dominates the national economy, followed by the industrial sector, and agriculture; international tourism is also a significant source of revenue.
Nationally, legislative authority is vested in an elected, unicameral Parliament, while executive political power is exercised by the Government, led by the prime minister, currently Christopher Luxon. Charles III is the country's king and is represented by the governor-general. In addition, New Zealand is organised into 11 regional councils and 67 territorial authorities for local government purposes. The Realm of New Zealand also includes Tokelau (a dependent territory); the Cook Islands and Niue (self-governing states in free association with New Zealand); and the Ross Dependency, which is New Zealand's territorial claim in Antarctica.
New Zealand is a member of the United Nations, Commonwealth of Nations, ANZUS, UKUSA, OECD, ASEAN Plus Six, Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, the Pacific Community and the Pacific Islands Forum. It enjoys particularly close relations with the United States and is one of its major non-NATO allies; the United Kingdom; and with Australia, with a shared "Trans-Tasman" identity between the two countries.

Pretty place, and it needs some maintenance work. Don’t go if it’s raining because you will not be able to see the birds. I didn’t see any bird except a peacock. And cages are dirty and almost destroyed. The office is closed.

It was a really bad experience

The structure on the road side with the name on is so stunning and elaborate, that I was really excited at the prospect.

      What a disappointment.

There are some yellow arrows telling you where to park. But then there is a very long track with yellow arrows to walk. It’s better to drive to the end of the track. Then you’re not allowed to park close. You have to walk from this 2nd closer carpark. I drove down, because I have mobility issues, and they begrudgingly allowed it.

There was nobody on site, except for a gentleman doing some cleaning (who said I could park there). I stood in the blazing sun for about 7 minutes. Then I walked to what looked like an office, but it was closed with “restricted access”.

Then I started walking around the disgusting, dirty cages that had all different birds hoarded together. I took 2 photos, but felt bad that I haven’t paid, or spoken to someone or wouldn’t get the full experience. So I left. I came all the way from West Auckland for this. When I left, a lady drove past on a golf cart. I’m not sure if she was supposed to help me.

There was a very friendly peacock who came to greet me

I highly recommend visiting this place while you’re in Hamilton. We arrived early in the morning, which was the perfect time to chat with the keepers and get an up-close look at the birds without too many other visitors around.

Absolutely beautiful experience! Took my 7yr and 2yr olds and wow we will be back! Lovely walks and the birds are so wonderful! A true gem of a place! Better than the zoo for us! My son got to hold a giant bird and my daughter loved patting the bunny and seeing the baby chicks that was their highlight! Also a playground and walking track! All for free! Love this place and will be bringing family and recommending to my freinds! Thankyou shaws bird park!

Shaw’s Bird Park is a 7ha area that is home to well over 500 native trees and multiple varieties of birds. Murray and Margaret Shaw bought this property when it was a gully full of blackberry and gorse. It is now a wonderful breeding ground for birds. They breed Mandarin, Carolina and NZ Grey Teal ducks. The park can have up to 2000 visitors a day in busy periods. There is a petition at Change.org under ‘Save Shaw’s Bird Park’ if you would like to add your name to stop council from running the East/West arterial road through the Shaw’s property (the park) within 1.9 meters of their house.

Every Sunday from 8am to 12pm. Lovely place to get freshly grown vegetables, handmade cheese, baked items, milk, bread, crepes, pies, coffee and few more things. Good parking space. One of the best places for morning coffee & grub, friendly local farmers & great food from the food trucks. Be sure to follow their facebook page to know the specials for the week, if any too. I always got fresh bread from Volare Bakery for a really good price too, which was amazing. The fresh pasta made on the spot was to die for, and the honey sold there is amazing. The granola is amazing too, and I miss it a lot. Brought back quite a bit for my family & they love it so much.

Don’t miss out on this! It’s only available on Sundays.

Fantastic real produce market. I have many things to state about this place. But some of my favourites are organic A2 milk, volare bread and Beckys cake. If you run out of cash, there was a eftpos service where they can charge you 2$ to get the cash. Really handy to buy vegetables and other stuffs. Fried burger was really tasty. And the hot beverages were good entertainer to sit and relax. One final thing if you need country eggs then this is the right place. You have play ground for kids in 1 km. Overall good Sunday visit.

Great place to hire from. Friendly staff, low mileage bikes, simple procedures. They went the extra mile for me 5 years ago. Still the same service, great bike and really hassle-free experience 5 years later. Many thanks to Tristan and his team. I’ll be back from France for a third road trip as soon as I can!

A fitness trail, trim trail or parcourse consists of a path or course with outdoor exercise equipment or obstacles installed along its length for exercising the human body to promote good health. The course is designed to promote physical fitness training in the style attributed to Georges Hébert. In general, fitness trails can be natural or man-made, located in areas such as forest, transportation rights-of-way, parks, or urban settings. Equipment exists to provide specific forms of physiological exercise, and can consist of natural features including climbable rocks, trees, and river embankments, or manufactured products (stepping posts, chin-up and climbing bars) designed to provide similar physical challenges. The degree of difficulty of a course is determined by terrain slope, trail surface (dirt, grass, gravel, etc.), obstacle height (walls) or length (crawls) and other features. Urban parcourses tend to be flat, to permit participation by the elderly, and to accommodate cyclists, runners, skaters and walking. The new concept of an outdoor gym, containing traditional gym equipment specifically designed for outdoor use, is also considered to be a development of the parcourse. These outdoor exercise gyms include moving parts and are often made from galvanised metal.

Literally the worst gym! The customer service is horrible! They stuff you around when trying to cancel & honestly just seems like they’re greedy for money! They’re slow at email responses! I have been paying for a membership for nearly one year & I’ve only ever been into the office & got the worst service it’s so disappointing going into such an intimidating place & having staff members that aren’t welcoming.. & it’s even more disappointing reading that everyone has the same experiences with them.

I initially joined because of the childcare and immediately loved the friendly, family vibe of the gym. I’ve been with FPF for 6 months now – it’s such an awesome place to work out and I feel really comfortable there. The gym staff are all super friendly and supportive. The crèche staff are sooooo kind – I feel like they genuinely enjoy being around the kids. Everyone seems happy there – I’m certainly happy there! Thanks FPF staff, I appreciate you all ?
