What to Consider When Visiting an Op Shop in Warrnambool

When going to a thrift store in Australia, there are several things to consider to ensure a successful and enjoyable shopping experience. Whether you’re looking for unique vintage pieces, affordable clothing, or hidden gems, these considerations can help make your thrift store adventure a success.

First and foremost, it’s important to have an idea of what you’re looking for before entering the thrift store. Thrift stores can be overwhelming with the amount of items they carry, so having a general idea of what you need or want can help you navigate through the aisles more efficiently.

Another important consideration is to set a budget. While thrift stores often have affordable prices, it’s still easy to get carried away and overspend. Setting a budget beforehand can help you stay on track and prevent any impulse purchases.

In addition to setting a budget, it’s also important to consider the condition of the items you’re interested in purchasing. While some thrift stores have strict quality control measures, others may not. Take the time to carefully inspect items for any damages, stains, or signs of wear. This will help you avoid purchasing items that may not last long or require extensive repairs.

Lastly, don’t be afraid to haggle or negotiate prices. Thrift stores often have a bit of flexibility when it comes to pricing, especially if an item has been sitting on the shelves for a while. Polite and respectful negotiation can sometimes lead to a better deal.

Overall, going to a thrift store in Australia can be a fun and rewarding experience. By considering these factors, you can increase your chances of finding unique and affordable treasures. Happy thrifting!

Things to Consider When Going to a Thrift Store in Australia:

    • Have an idea of what you’re looking for before entering.
    • Set a budget to prevent overspending.
    • Inspect items for any damages or signs of wear.
    • Don’t be afraid to haggle or negotiate prices.

A pretty good sized store, well organised, friendly staff on the day I was there, and they don’t forget they’re selling pre-loved stuff (i.e. people’s old stuff) when they’re pricing. Or to put it more clearly, they don’t overprice. Picked up some great bargains.

Lovley shop with some reasonably priced items, biggest negative is the two larger guys I’ve met on occasions when making donations, they have a serious attitude problem and are put out if you donate items that then need to be sorted. I.e a bag with mixed items. No thanks just disgruntled huffing and puffing. They may be volunteering but manners cost nothing.

I shared my experience yesterday which I can not find now strange anyway St vinnies was selling the item the same as the normal shop price I pointed it out as it is suppose to be that bit more affordable for the people the man was rude so I call the manager Kim in the Cranbourne store the next day and told her what happened she just did not want to know what a joke this is not for the way they should treat people I will never donate or be in their store again

So here we go ! . I wasn’t sure where to post this but given it’s the same organization, it’s best here.

Your church, charity, business, run’s soup vans, I see one regularly at Narre Warren! . I assume it’s origin he’s something to do with your Cranbury op shop

One of your clients, recently seriously assaulted me , causing injuries which can’t be fixed I guess being a church you believe in the religious ideology of ” saving” all people even if evil

I will make it clear, thus assault wasn’t in the presence of your van membes , nor were they in the area, However , your church as another in Narre Warren, helps violent junkies, mental health patients , ex crims, etc . The person who assaulted me is regularly given free food by vinnies

Why are you helping the lowest of the low, of society? I have also posted a review about another local place who helps him . I will not accept, excuses like drug and alcohol use, mental health, a.d.h.d , he was bullied at school, mummy didn’t love him .

Plenty of people, have issues and aren’t violent , your van along with another organization shouldn’t be allowed to set up around a commercial shopping centre precinct, given some of the clientele you serve

I certainly won’t donate even $1 to , any church based charity ever

Isn’t it ironic? , How Centrelink pays junkies DSP , yet they can’t work

They’re fit enough though to attack a senior, I’m in that age range .. If vinnies aren’t happy with my review tough I don’t intend on removing it The attack your client committed, is on camera , but won’t be reported what hope do I have of justice, when Vinnie’s and transit church will just take a clients side

Vinnie’s appreciate the goods that I donate, they don’t throw out 90% of what you donate like Salvo,s do.. Sale prices are reasonable too if your a buyer.. I had quite a few bad experiences whilst trying to donate good new clothes at Salvo store in Cranbourne Nth, especially when I discovered most of my donations ended up in the dumpster…. just disgusted I was.. I was in Salvo store a few days ago, all you could hear is the staff in the back room smashing things that were kindly donated by genuine public being smashed in the bins..

This is another good Salvos I visited. I bought an oversized men’s shirt with huge front pockets for $10, which looks similar to current Louis Vuitton Resort 2023 collection. Totally a good find! Staffs are very lovely too.

I absolutely love this op shop, I always walk out with a bargain and they have a large variety of items. The staff went above and beyond for me one time, allowing me to purchase a beautiful shelving unit that they were using (which I replaced with something that wasn’t as nice) Reading the older reviews, I think people confuse this Salvation Army op shop with the large Salvo’s op shop on Sth Gippsland Hwy.

How to Donate to an Op Shop in Australia

If you have items that you no longer need or want, donating them to an op shop (also known as a thrift store) in Australia is a great way to give back to your community and help those in need. Whether it’s clothing, furniture, electronics, or household items, there are a few simple steps you can follow to donate to an op shop:

    • Step 1: Choose a charity or op shop to donate to. There are numerous charities and op shops in Australia, so choose one that aligns with your values and supports causes you care about.
    • Step 2: Check the op shop’s donation guidelines. Different op shops have different rules and restrictions on what they accept. Make sure to check their website or contact them directly to find out what items they are currently accepting.
    • Step 3: Clean and sort your items. Before donating, take the time to clean and organize your items. This will make it easier for the op shop to process and sell them.
    • Step 4: Pack your items in bags or boxes. Place your items in bags or boxes that are easy to carry and transport.
    • Step 5: Take your donation to the op shop. Visit the op shop during their opening hours and drop off your donation. Some op shops may offer a curbside donation drop-off service, so check if this option is available.

By following these steps, you can easily donate your items to an op shop in Australia and make a positive impact in your community.

First time that I have been in the Salvos Store Traralgon but it will not be the last. The staff were so friendly and helpful which was fantastic. Plus the variety of stock was fabulous – and yes I came away with a bargain ‼️

Salvos have been in the process of upscaling their stores to make them less “trash and treasure” and more like a *proper* store. I kind of miss the old style, but I can appreciate what they’re doing here – the stock’s well curated, the shop is very well presented, they offer a bunch of new and interesting items (such as confectionery) and the staff are kind and helpful. I like going through their collection of media and books! And the location is pretty good, it’s located right next to the main road through town so it’s not hard to find.

Plenty of range, not as big as the Viinnies down the road but better stuff I reckon. There was heaps of well ordered clothes, kids clothes, toys, books and bric a brac. Not a huge amount of furniture but what furniture they did have was really cool. Got some smick stuff from here. Location really convenient just off the main road.

Absolute rip off. They’re more expensive for furniture than fantastic and Kmart. Crazy prices on everything, marked up and too expensive for an op shop.

Absolutely ridiculous pricing so expensive given they are all donated items and they want top dollar for stuff. They have anko top from kmart they want more for them that an kmart brand new it ridiculous.

A good little op shop that’s been here for decades. Has a good selection of knick-knacks and clothing, and isn’t overly curated like a lot of other thrift stores are starting to do. It’s also located in the town centre and close to parking, so you can pop in while out doing errands. One of the places I try to go regularly.

Best time to shop at Op Shops Australia

Op shops, or charity thrift stores, in Australia are a treasure trove of bargains just waiting to be discovered. But when is the best time to shop at these stores? Well, it depends on what you’re looking for. Here’s a breakdown of the best times to shop at Op shops in Australia:

    1. Spring Cleaning Time:

    • Spring is a popular time for people to declutter their homes and donate unwanted items.
    • This means that Op shops will be receiving a lot of new stock during this time.
    • You can find a wide variety of items, from clothing to furniture, at great prices.

    2. End of Season Sales:

    • Op shops often have sales to clear out items at the end of each season.
    • This is a great time to stock up on clothing for the upcoming season.
    • You can find designer labels and brand-name items for a fraction of the original price.

    3. Public Holidays:

    • Op shops in Australia often have sales and promotions during public holidays.
    • This is a great time to shop, as you can find even better deals on already discounted items.
    • Popular public holidays to look out for include Australia Day, Easter, and Christmas.

    4. Midweek Visits:

    • If you’re looking for a less crowded shopping experience, try visiting Op shops during the week.
    • Weekends tend to be busier, so you may have more luck finding hidden gems on a quieter day.
    • Staff may also have more time to assist you and answer any questions you may have.

When it comes to Op shopping in Australia, keep in mind that each store can have its own unique offerings. Some shops may specialize in clothing, while others may have a larger selection of furniture or home goods. It’s always a good idea to call ahead or visit the store’s website to see what they have in stock before making a trip.

This was my first time back to op shopping since the pandemic hit. I was so happy that I started again at this flagship-like Vinnie’s! Had a great time browsing in the shop, got support from friendly staff, found awesome stuff I’d wanted to get in a long time and the parking was so easy!

Prices here are RIDICULOUSLY high! And they call this an Op shop? What happened to helping the poor? I can buy cheaper items at Myer than this place. I mean $30 for a used Kmart top. And for Dandenong.. Not worth going if you want to be paying more than you should be.

Very well organised shop, loads of space to walk around and browse. Good labelling and categorisation of the various departments. Books are placed properly and shelved. Everything is super neat and tidy – Even the clothes are colour coordinated. Well worth the trip

Good place to buy some general household items and clothes. Most of the merchandise are second hand features a small number of new items as well. Has a good selection of items and most prices are reasonable. Better to have an idea of the market value of an item just so you know you are getting a good deal.

I don’t know what’s going on with the prices in the op shops these days but $100 for second hand damaged furniture? I can buy brand new from IKEA with that price. What happened to helping out the poor. If I’m donating items I don’t want them being sold off more than they should be.

It’s a great store and improved once the previous manageress got hired elsewhere. The only suggestion I would like to make is that the change rooms are way too small, dark and the reflection from the red doors does nothing to make clothes look appealing. Apart from that, it beats Rowville Salvos hands down.

How to Donate to an Op Shop in Australia

If you have items that you no longer need or want, donating them to an op shop (also known as a thrift store) in Australia is a great way to give back to your community and help those in need. Op shops rely on donations from individuals like you to stock their shelves and raise funds for various charitable causes. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to donate to an op shop in Australia.

    • Step 1: Choose a charity – There are many op shops in Australia run by different charities. Research and select a charity that aligns with your values and causes you want to support.
    • Step 2: Find a local op shop – Use the charity’s website or online directories to locate op shops in your local area.
    • Step 3: Check donation guidelines – Visit the op shop’s website or call them to check their donation guidelines. Some op shops may have specific criteria for the items they accept.
    • Step 4: Sort and clean your items – Before donating, make sure to sort through your items and only donate those that are in good condition and still usable. Clean the items if necessary.
    • Step 5: Drop off your donation – Take your donation to the op shop during their opening hours. Some op shops also offer donation collection services, so check if that option is available.
    • Step 6: Get a receipt – Ask for a donation receipt if you would like to claim a tax deduction for your donation. Keep the receipt for your records.

Donating to an op shop is a simple and meaningful way to contribute to your community and reduce waste. By following these steps, you can easily donate your unwanted items and support a good cause.

I really love this opshop, it’s a hidden gem and has such a large selection of goodies, good condition furniture and clothing, shoes, linen and kids stuff. Elderly male volunteer/staff member working at the clothing drop off was incredibly rude and accused me of cutting someone off when I simply parked next to another (already parked!) car in the donations drop off area. How this translates to cutting someone off when there was clearly enough space for 2 cars I do not know. Absolutely ridiculous and a disgusting way to treat members of the public who are supporting your charity. I had 5 bags of mostly new clothing to donate, ended up taking them to another op shop where the volunteers were polite and reasonable.

You’re supposed to be there to help those less fortunate yet can’t reduce something when requested. I was told that the price is firm as new stock…seriously donated items you paid nothing for and you only see the profit! I have shopped here and donated here many times in the past. Disgusting and will never shop here again.

Best time to shop at Op Shops Australia

Op shops in Australia can be a treasure trove for vintage clothing, unique furniture, and other second-hand items. If you’re planning on hitting up some op shops, it’s good to know when is the best time to shop. Here are some tips on the best time to shop at op shops in Australia:

    1. Weekdays

Weekdays are generally the best time to shop at op shops in Australia, as they tend to be less crowded compared to weekends. If you want to have first dibs on the best items, try to go on a weekday morning when the op shop opens. This will give you a better chance of finding those hidden gems before they get picked over.

    2. Sale Days

Many op shops in Australia have special sale days where they offer discounted prices on selected items. These sale days can be a great time to shop as you can score some amazing bargains. Keep an eye out for advertisements or ask the staff at your local op shop about any upcoming sale days.

    3. End of Season

Op shops often receive donations of clothing and other items at the end of each season. This means that you can often find great deals on seasonal items as the op shop tries to clear out their inventory to make room for new donations. For example, you might be able to score winter coats at a fraction of their original cost at the end of winter.

    4. Holidays

Holidays like Christmas, Easter, and Halloween can be a great time to shop at op shops in Australia. Many people clean out their closets before these holidays and donate items to op shops. This means that you might be able to find some unique holiday-themed items or decorations at a fraction of the cost of buying them new.

    5. Op Shop Tours

If you’re not sure where to start with op shopping or want to discover new op shops in Australia, consider going on an op shop tour. These tours are often organized by local vintage or thrift stores and can be a fun and efficient way to explore multiple op shops in a single day. Plus, the tour guides are usually experts in op shopping and can give you tips and tricks for finding the best items.

One of my favourite op shops. Great range, especially manchester, books (organised by author, love that), kitchen wares, and much more. Friendly staff. I love that they’re open on Sundays too.

used to be a great op shop and now they’ve gone insane on prices. some items costing more than they would brand new and when asked about it they blame it on inflation?? what happened to op shops being affordable and having adequate pricing for the less fortunate souls. absolute rip off merchants considering they are a charity. disgraceful.

We were able to pick up a fair few great condition history and business books, some cool toys and kitchen sets for cheap here, Staff were friendly and got us a box to carry it out.

Parking bay was full but we could park on the street nearby.

Whoever prices the items needs to leave and find themselves a job at an antique store. You would be doing the community a huge favour ? Your prices are absolutely ridiculous. If you price your items according to antique shops, then you should be taxed like one too. You’re a business, not a charity.

How to Donate to an Op Shop in Australia

Donating to an op shop (opportunity shop) in Australia is a great way to help those in need and declutter your home at the same time. Op shops are run by charities and rely on donations from the community to stock their stores. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to donate to an op shop in Australia:

    • Step 1: Sort through your items
Before donating, go through your belongings and separate items that are no longer needed or used. This can include clothing, shoes, accessories, household goods, furniture, books, toys, and more. Make sure items are clean and in good condition.
    • Step 2: Choose a reputable op shop
Research op shops in your area and find one that supports a cause you believe in. Some well-known op shops in Australia include Vinnies (St Vincent de Paul Society), Salvos (Salvation Army), and Red Cross op shops.
    • Step 3: Check donation guidelines
Visit the op shop’s website or give them a call to find out their specific donation guidelines. Some op shops have certain items they do not accept, such as electrical goods or large furniture.
    • Step 4: Transport your donations
Put your donations in bags or boxes, making sure they are securely packed. If you have larger items like furniture, contact the op shop to arrange pick-up or drop-off options.
    • Step 5: Deliver your donations
Take your donations to the op shop during their opening hours. Most op shops have designated drop-off points or a staff member who can assist you. Make sure to let them know you are donating and follow any instructions they provide.
    • Step 6: Get a receipt
Ask for a donation receipt when dropping off your items. This will allow you to claim a tax deduction if you choose to do so. Keep the receipt for your records.

Shop opens on Sunday, staffs work hard, but lots of items are faulty, staffs smart level are low than standard, the Curley hair cashier works 1yr + still didn’t know how to process credit note payment, n even Sam did not know what was going & blamed me! The tall female shop supervisor works on Sunday was terrible, I purchased faulty item or missing parts, but she not allowed you to exchange or return, and it was not stated sold as it on the item. none of the shop in Au has such rules, her behaviour was against the consumer law. What are low ethic and low educated people! I will not shop & donate there again.

I have been regularly donating my handmade knitted items – for babies, dolls etc. for over a year now. The lady there is/was amazing & very, very appreciative for my donations. But… the other day I dropped off my newly knitted items & the lady wasn’t there, a younger girl was there instead. She had absolutely no interest in talking to me, she couldn’t even make eye contact with me. She was so much more concerned with what her children were doing than attending to a customer donating goods.

I’m sorry but I will be taking my goods elsewhere.

How to Donate to an Op Shop in Australia

If you have clothes, household items, or other goods that you no longer need or want, one great option for getting rid of them is to donate them to an op shop (also known as an opportunity shop or charity shop). Op shops in Australia accept donations of gently used items and sell them to raise money for various charitable causes. Donating to an op shop not only helps those in need, but it also reduces waste and promotes sustainable consumption. If you’re interested in donating to an op shop in Australia, here’s how you can do it:

    1. Find a local op shop: Start by locating op shops in your area. You can do this by searching online, using directories such as National Op Shop Week’s database, or asking friends and family for recommendations.

    2. Check the guidelines: Different op shops have different guidelines for what they accept as donations. Before dropping off your items, check the op shop’s website or give them a call to find out what they are currently in need of and what they cannot accept. This will help ensure that your donations are put to good use.

    3. Clean and sort your items: Before donating, make sure to clean your items and ensure they are in good condition. Some op shops do not have the resources to repair or clean items, so it’s best to donate things that are in a sellable state.

    4. Drop off your donations: Once you know what items are accepted and have prepared them for donation, you can drop them off at the op shop. Many op shops have designated drop-off points or donation bins, while some may require you to bring your donations to their store during opening hours.

    5. Consider other ways to support op shops: In addition to donating goods, there are other ways to support op shops. You can volunteer your time, shop at op shops to give items a second life, or even consider leaving a monetary donation if the op shop accepts them.

    • Locate local op shops through online directories or recommendations from friends and family.
    • Check the op shop’s guidelines for accepted items.
    • Clean and prepare your donations for drop-off.
    • Drop off your items at the op shop’s designated location.
    • Consider other ways to support op shops, such as volunteering or shopping there.

It’s not the greatest op shop. I find the stock turn over isn’t high and the quality of the clothes is lacking, often aged or ratty. A few in need of a wash cause quite fowl texture or smell. Pricing is okay. I’ve yet to find anything great here. Staff are fine.

Words cannot express how deeply infuriated and disappointed I was by my experience at Salvos this morning. I’ve been on the lookout for a pair of work boots for an upcoming job, so naturally was thrilled to see a well-worn but very wearable pair of leather Timberlands in the shoe section. They were a perfect fit. Excited about my lucky find, I approached the counter to purchase the boots. The volunteer who served me, unfortunately, took it upon herself to deem the boots too worn to sell! I reassured her that I wasn’t concerned about the wear and tear and would gladly take the shoes in their present condition. They were very wearable (I tried them on), so I wasn’t concerned with the rough aesthetic. The lady then took the boots out the back to ‘ask the manager’. She returned empty-handed to explain to me that she wasn’t allowed to sell the boots as it was an ‘OHS concern.’ Beyond that, she claimed the issue was for her to SELL the boots, not for me to wear them. Completely, utterly absurd. I reassured her that I was CONTENT with the state of the boots, that I liked them, that they fit me perfectly and I would gladly buy them. She wasn’t budging. Seeing that the woman wasn’t interested in a conversation or a rational discussion, I departed in disgust.

After simmering on the situation for some time, I returned to the store to speak with the manager. She informed me that the boots had been thrown IN THE BIN, and that since I’d left, the bins had been collected by the council. The high-quality leather boots were currently en route to landfill. Seeing my devastation at the news, the manager thought it warranted to interject with “Well, they weren’t your boots – they were ours.” A lovely comment. She went on to tell me that they’re not able to sell anything which is ripped, dirty or damaged in any way. I responded by asking her whether or not she thought someone in challenging circumstances in need of footwear would turn down a pair of shoes because they had dirt on them. She responded “Actually, they would!” Another beautiful quote. I then asked whether I could see some policy documentation which states clearly that it would have been illegal to sell me the boots. She denied my request stating that she didn’t need to show me anything.

If you wanted proof that the Idiocracy is real, look no further. Even IF it was illegal for those shoes to be sold, could they not have been given away? Apparently, it makes more sense for them to go to landfill rather than to a young person with meagre means. Are these the altruistic principles of Salvos on display? Perhaps times have changed, and SALVOS is now more concerned with profiteering rather than helping those in need. Both the volunteer who served me and the manager should be deeply ashamed. I mean DEEPLY ashamed. Rant over.

I’m an Op Shop aficionado. So are my adult kids. We all enjoy exploring second hand, reused, recycled stores as well as Op Shops. We have underlying values around not buying new if there is something preloved available. I’ve been to Sacred Heart Mission Op Shop many times but rarely buy anything. Why? I always say that I’ll eat average food but not tolerate average service. Same with stores, I might find something nice but unpleasant staff turn me away. Staff here are often grumpy which seems to be a theme in other reviews. I consider myself to be very friendly, affable and gracious but the staff were just unpleasant. The store is well laid into sections eg books, men’s clothes, women’s clothes, jewellery, books etc, there isn’t a lot of kitchenware and mainly focussed on fashion. It’s always been that way – alas! The stock is reasonable but some of it is a bit ‘scrappy’ and not worth considering, so choose carefully.

Notes: Location is great. Good parking out the front. Disability friendly. Kid friendly. Plastic bags available in store to take away your goodies.

Worst op shop ever!Went to try some items on and while I was hanging the items that I didn’t want outside the fitting room, this rude old lady was waiting outside asking me impolitely to return all the items where I got them from. I then politely said, I’ve seen a few items out here before but you didn’t say anything to them. So I said ok I’ll put them back for you, she then shockingly said no, do it for you not for me. She sounded like an angry mother telling her child to clean up the mess. Shockingly nasty! What made it more interesting is that the manager was there and just silently watching the whole incident.didn’t say a thing to this particularly rude old lady for this kind of treatment. Seemed like this kind of treatment to customers is pleasantly accepted. I still went and pay for the items that I wanted, and the so called manager was at the register yet totally ignored me. I had to call another lady to let me pay.

I’ve been to many op shops but this one is uniquely full of rude staff including the manager himself.

This place isn’t worth even a dollar out of your pocket if what you’ll get is this kind of behavior from the staff. They’re not pleasant nor polite to their customers. Yes it’s cheap, but people still spend money on things!!

We had a shocking experience while donating clothes. Lady at the front told us to go in the back near donation section. While we were standing there a male customer rep started yelling at us in the rudest manner saying why are we standing there. Possibly the worst experience I’ve had in quite some time. Very rude staff members. An extremely demeaning and annoying experience at a charity store seems odd. I believe this place is just a front for PR. It seems like others also had similar experience with unpleasant staff.

It’s a nice little store with loads of fun finds. Expectedly, the prices are great! Some comments have noted that staff are rude. It’s partly true, but not to the point where I won’t return.

This Sacred Heart Mission Op Shop is one of the better op shops with newstock continually coming in. It’s quite large and is well laid out and has a good ambiance and feel to it. Being on Clarendon Street, parking can be difficult but it’s just a short walk from Park Street Stop 129 on St Kilda Tram Route 12 and Clarendon Street Stop 24 on South Melbourne Beach Tram Route 1.
