Darwin ( DAR-win; Larrakia: Garramilla) is the capital city of the Northern Territory, Australia. With a population of 139,902 at the 2021 census, the city contains most of the sparsely populated Northern Territory's residents. It is the smallest, wettest, and most northerly of the Australian capital cities and serves as the Top End's regional centre. Darwin's proximity to Southeast Asia makes it a key link between Australia and countries such as Indonesia and East Timor. The Stuart Highway begins in Darwin and extends southerly across central Australia through Tennant Creek and Alice Springs, concluding in Port Augusta, South Australia. The city is built upon a low bluff overlooking Darwin Harbour. Darwin's suburbs begin at Lee Point in the north and stretch to Berrimah in the east. The Stuart Highway extends to Darwin's eastern satellite city of Palmerston and its suburbs. The Darwin region, like much of the Top End, has a tropical climate, with a wet and dry season. A period known locally as "the build up" leading up to Darwin's wet season sees temperature and humidity increase. Darwin's wet season typically arrives in late November to early December and brings with it heavy monsoonal downpours, spectacular lightning displays, and increased cyclone activity. During the dry season, the city has clear skies and mild sea breezes from the harbour. The Larrakia people are the traditional owners of the Darwin area and Aboriginal people are a significant proportion of the population. On 9 September 1839, HMS Beagle sailed into Darwin Harbour during its survey of the area. John Clements Wickham named the region "Port Darwin" in honour of their former shipmate Charles Darwin, who had sailed with them on the ship's previous voyage. The settlement there became the town of Palmerston in 1869, but was renamed Darwin in 1911. The city has been almost entirely rebuilt four times, following devastation caused by a cyclone in 1897, another one in 1937, Japanese air raids during World War II, and Cyclone Tracy in 1974.

    Drive out to East Point to the Darwin military museum. It is a wonderful exhibit and history lesson. The drive out to East Point is really scenic and there’s a lot of places to stop and take photographs or enjoy a picnic lunch. The museum is worth the visit. It is very educational and the exhibits and recreation of the bombing of Darwin from historic photographs into a film is incredible. Highly recommend.

    So much to see in this place. The grounds go on forever with lots of great informative displays. Inside was WW2 info including a really good movie on the bombing of Darwin. Worth a visit

    Today I took my 11 year old grandson to the DMM he said it has been his best day ever. Temp is 38′ ? however we went through every exhibition and he read most (time permitting) of the information that he could. I personally believe our young ones learn as much as they can about the history of war and Australia’s part in the hope that history does not repeat itself.

    Well worth a look. Guided tours would be an advantage (if there was it wasn’t offered) and give the displays a good dusting. Educate the front desk staff what a veterans pension card is as both of them didn’t know. Presented mine and at first it was refused as they said it wasn’t a pension card. After showing them the smaller writing on the back (Vet affairs) was accepted

    Wonderful institution for natural and social history, as well as the superlative National Indigenous Art Award exhibition and contemporary visual arts programming. Bonus, a decent cafe and million dollar view, with the Darwin Ski Club just next door. It’s always worth a stop to see what’s inside…

    We had no expectations and were so glad we decided to visit. We easily spent a couple of hours here, we could have spent longer.
    Loved the modern art, the cyclone Tracey display & all the boats
    So fantastic this is available free of charge.
    Will definitely visit when we are next in Darwin

    Loved everything about this place, the amazing artwork, the stories behind the artists. The place is well thought out and the displays give the right amount of information. A must when you visit Darwin

    This was a brilliant museum for both adults and children. It had free entry, with donations suggested but not pushed.
    It was very informative and had some brilliant displays. There were some really lovely indigenous artwork, a cyclone Tracy display, displays on the wet vs dry season in the NT and displays on local wildlife.
    On the day that we went, there was a treasure hunt for kids to find all of the Lego mini figures in the exhibits. This was an ingenious idea and was fun for adults and kids alike.

    This was surprisingly amazing! I’m not of a museum person, and with rainy weather and not a lot else to do in Darwin we figured we would check it out. Beautiful indigenous artwork! The cafe is pretty basic but it’s nice that they have it there as an option
