Napier ( NAY-pee-ər; Māori: Ahuriri) is a city on the eastern coast of the North Island of New Zealand and the seat of the Hawke's Bay region. It is a beachside city with a seaport, known for its sunny climate, esplanade lined with Norfolk pines, and extensive Art Deco architecture. Napier is sometimes referred to as the "Nice of the Pacific", although that is largely outdated and a more common nickname is 'The Art Deco Capital of the world'. The population of Napier is about 67,500 as of June 2023. About 18 km (11 mi) south of Napier is the inland city of Hastings. These two neighbouring cities are often called "The Bay Cities" or "The Twin Cities" of New Zealand, with the two cities and the surrounding towns of Havelock North and Clive having a combined population of 136,290. The City of Napier has a land area of 106 km2 (41 sq mi) and a population density of 540.0 per square kilometre. Napier is the nexus of the largest wool centre in the Southern Hemisphere, and it has the primary export seaport for northeastern New Zealand – which is the largest producer of apples, pears, and stone fruit in New Zealand. The Hawke's Bay wine region is now the second largest in New Zealand after Marlborough, and grapes grown around Hastings and Napier are sent through the Port of Napier for export. Large amounts of sheep's wool, frozen meat, wood pulp, and timber also pass through Napier annually for export. Smaller amounts of these materials are shipped via road and railway to the large metropolitan areas of New Zealand itself, such as Auckland, Wellington and Hamilton. Napier is a popular tourist city, with a unique concentration of 1930s Art Deco, and to a lesser extent Spanish Mission, architecture, built after much of the city was razed in the 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake. It also has one of the most photographed tourist attractions in the country, a statue of the figure in local Ngāti Kahungunu mythology, Pania, on Marine Parade, Pania of the Reef. Thousands of people flock to Napier every February for the Tremains Art Deco Weekend event, a celebration of its Art Deco heritage and history. Food and Wine Classic events, and the Mission Estate Concert at Mission Estate Winery in the suburb of Taradale.

    Awesome art gallery. I got the chance to learn more about Jan Nigro’s work. As an Asian, her artworks are abit thought-provoking, but you can begin to understand her point of view from the well designed art gallery. Kudos! ????????

    We loved the interactive exhibits and activities during the school holidays. Really nice little gallery.

    We attended the vr tour and it was a good experience but the time given wasn’t enough to try all the different vr sets unfortunately. The lady that was taking the tour was just trying to kick us out near the end of the tour so it didn’t feel very welcoming.

    This is such a chilled place to visit, with excellent food. Walk around the garden and duck pond, say hello to the ostriches and checkout the fantastic African garden statues and stoneware – all for sale. They also have an amazing gift shop and olde worlde sweet shop. Absolutely love this place, I’ve been several times and intend to go back a lot more.

    Birdwoods is in a stunning location, we sat outside for lunch, it was a little breezy the day we went but the outdoor space is great. Its reasonably sheltered, heaps of room for kids to play on the lawn and the sculpture garden itself is also worth a wander. There were ostriches next to the parking lot which was cool. There are heaps of shade trees and beautiful smelling flowers. The sweet store has loads of delightful things and there is the ice cream cart for the warmer days. Its was pretty busy the day we went so the service was a little slow but the staff were all quite attentive. My grandmother had the salmon quiche which she enjoyed immensely, I had poached eggs on toast which was nicely cooked but the vegetarian options are a little plain. Highly rate the iced coffee I had, that was amazing. The entrance to the cafe can be a little confusing as the path is a little narrow and tucked away so I recommend parking in the overflow car park to walk directly into the garden.

    Perfect cafe sculpture garden setting. Can’t decide which part is best; the shop, sculpture garden, lolly shop, real fruit ice cream or ostriches! Recommend this place for a relaxed afternoon lunch or tea

    Beautiful place to be on a hot summer afternoon to enjoy a real fruit ice cream, not to mention popping into the lolly shop. While you are here, you could also enjoy afternoon tea at
    the cafe and a stroll around the grounds and enjoy the gallery.Staff are very pleasant and obliging. Would strongly recommend a visit.??

    Beautiful place to visit, lovely garden and games for the kids. The only let down was your male server, who took their time coming to take our order and then when he did take our order he didn’t listen because he got the sweet scone wrong, and left off a drink and my childs meal. So the adults meals arrived but nothing for the young one – in service the kids meal should always come out before or at the same time. If i hadn’t have checked, nothing would have come. I have time to write this review as I’m sitting here waiting for the meal to come.
    Better service required to make it a super enjoyable experience. However, a stunning place with tasty good value food.
