Canberra ( KAN-bər-ə) is the capital city of Australia. Founded following the federation of the colonies of Australia as the seat of government for the new nation, it is Australia's largest inland city and the eighth-largest Australian city overall. The city is located at the northern end of the Australian Capital Territory at the northern tip of the Australian Alps, the country's highest mountain range. As of June 2022, Canberra's estimated population was 456,692.The area chosen for the capital had been inhabited by Aboriginal Australians for up to 21,000 years, by groups including the Ngunnawal, Ngunawal and Ngambri. European settlement commenced in the first half of the 19th century, as evidenced by surviving landmarks such as St John's Anglican Church and Blundells Cottage. On 1 January 1901, federation of the colonies of Australia was achieved. Following a long dispute over whether Sydney or Melbourne should be the national capital, a compromise was reached: the new capital would be built in New South Wales, so long as it was at least 100 mi (160 km) from Sydney. The capital city was founded and formally named as Canberra in 1913. A plan by the American architects Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin was selected after an international design contest, and construction commenced in 1913. Unusual among Australian cities, it is an entirely planned city. The Griffins' plan featured geometric motifs and was centred on axes aligned with significant topographical landmarks such as Black Mountain, Mount Ainslie, Capital Hill and City Hill. Canberra's mountainous location makes it the only mainland Australian city where snow-capped mountains can be seen in winter; although snow in the city itself is uncommon. As the seat of the Government of Australia, Canberra is home to many important institutions of the federal government, national monuments and museums. This includes Parliament House, Government House, the High Court building and the headquarters of numerous government agencies. It is the location of many social and cultural institutions of national significance such as the Australian War Memorial, the Australian National University, the Royal Australian Mint, the Australian Institute of Sport, the National Gallery, the National Museum and the National Library. The city is home to many important institutions of the Australian Defence Force including the Royal Military College Duntroon and the Australian Defence Force Academy. At the 2016 Census, 32% of Canberra's inhabitants were reported as having been born overseas.Canberra's design is influenced by the garden city movement and incorporates significant areas of natural vegetation.     Love the food stalls here, international meals (falafels, dumplings, pretzels, donuts, pastries, wraps…) come and have a great bite. Variety of small local shops (jewellery, gifts, clothes, decorations…) spent 1.5 hr

    This was my first time at the Kingston foreshore and it was a nice little Sunday market. There are two levels where the bottom level has different food stalls from Jordanian, Ethiopian, Korean and Filipino cuisine to bagels, fresh produce, BBQ rubs and cannolis. The top level has craft’s and clothing stalls. It’s a good little stop to break up your Sunday.

    A great place to grab a bite. Bakery favourites are sold out early. Many diverse food options. Card payment option is available at most food vendors.

    The market is clean and well organised. Plenty of carpark via Eastlake Parade entrance.

    The market opens from 9.30 to 2.30 but sometimes some of the stalls have late closings (the good food has probably run out). I recommend you to try the Jordanian and Laotian cuisine, they are great! The fudge sold here also tastes amazing. Keep in mind that there’s a glasswork museum next to the market which is worth visiting.

    Haven’t been here in over 5 years and what a huge change. So many stores so many food places. The produce options for food was so good. We tried various places for food. We even managed to buy some books. We had a lovely few hours exploring

    I’m not sure what to cook! So I went to #fyshwickmarkets for a stroll in the market! The jumbo blueberries in City are always sold out, but I found them here, so I bought two boxes right away. One box of Jumbo blueberries costs $4.9!

    Additionally, they had a wide variety of tomatoes on display, including a unique one called ox heart/cow heart! However, they were quite expensive. @bili_blu managed to buy gourmet tomatoes for $2.9/kg, which is a better deal. ??

    They also had a wide selection of free-range eggs here. Personally, I recommend #Canobolas Free Range Eggs from the Wiffcns stall. The eggs are fresh, the shells are thick, and the egg yolks have a beautiful color! Plus, the price is not too high, $7 for 12 eggs!

    As for seafood, I don’t recommend buying it here. Although they have a variety, the prices are high. It’s better to go to Belconnen for that!

    Fyshwick markets are my weekly go-to for fresh produce in Canberra. There is a wide variety of green grocers, butchers, seafood stores, delicatessens , an assortment of cafes and food stalls, and much much more. All the stores offer fresh produce and much better quality than you will find at the major supermarkets. The prices are also comparable to the supermarkets and sometimes much cheaper (especially for the quality).
    A few recommendations if you want to grab a meal or a drink- try a barista brewed coffee and a pastry at Piccolo, if you’re hungry the kebabs at Turkish Kebab House are massive, the fresh handmade dumplings at MaMa Dumpling are excellent, fresh cooked fish and chips at Ocean Fresh Seafood, try a Pho soup at the Vietnamese bakery (an institution), or a loaded pan style pizza slice at newly opened Colosseum. Also there are a couple of sausage stands if you feel like the classic gourmet snag on a roll.

    There are always samples as well for those who like to try before they buy. The grocers will normally do you a deal for bulk-buys eg boxes of fruit (just ask). The butchers are also accommodating for special orders.

    My Local Guide TIP: come in on Sunday afternoon when you can buy heavily discounted perishable items (meats, veg, etc) that they clear before closing for Mon- Wed.

    Definitely worth a visit if you want to get some quality produce or grab something to eat.

    Nice collection of shops to cater to groceries and brunch needs. There’s a nice Asian supply store carrying all the herbs and spices you need and some other things. There’s also a nice halal poultry store selling mainly fresh chicken and some little meat cuts. The fruits and veggies we got at Fyshwick are also always some of the best.

    If you care about quality cooking, with the highest of quality ingredients, you NEED to shop here.
    Sure things are pricey, but that’s what makes a good meal, great.
    Freshest of the freshest bread, fruit and vege, meat, cheese, the list goes on.
    The atmosphere is bussing. Always busy and moving, just like a fresh market should be.
    Sometimes there’s live music and there’s plenty of places to grab a gorgeous lunch.
    You can spend hours here and still be surprised by what’s around the corner.

    I recommend going when its busy as its awesome seeing so many smiles about food 🙂
